A. GOLF BUSINESS
1. Golf Consultants—Discovery Findings: Mr. Calvert outlined the discovery process they
had begun which included the gathering of information, benchmarking of data and analyzing of
survey results in order to come up with operational recommendations for future management at
Miacomet and Sconset Golf Courses. Commissioners were individually questioned to expand upon
some of their survey answers where consensus was lacking, and it was suggested that the
Commission should try to put forth a brief mission statement and vision for the courses for the next
meeting in June. Mr. Calvert explained that they were almost done with their discovery work and
needed to get some additional details from the operation regarding off season rounds and dining
covers that were not being tracked in the same manner as the high season. In addition, they planned
to interview golf course personnel who would also be asked to fill out an anonymous survey. They
were also planning to post a survey for the general public through July to gain additional insight
towards a recommendation of future goals. Mr. Ferris explained that the financial reports that were
being provided were not broken down by department which was atypical, and that he would have
recommendations about how the reports could be better organized for clarity. However, he did think
the current software was sufficient for both courses'needs. The consultants stated they would have
recommendations for the mission statements, operations, management and facilities needs at the final
meeting in July, but wanted to consider the Commissioners opinions before sharing them. Further,
they assured the Commission that the differing views between owners, management, membership
and the general public were not entirely unique to Nantucket and they hoped their recommendations
would achieve a balance that satisfied all parties. The Commissioners thanked them for their time
and said they looked forward to the next step.
2. Letter from Commission to Miacomet Golf Course Staff: Chairman Reinhard
presented a memo to the Miacomet Golf Course staff from the Commissioners to explain that
although the current management contract is over at the end of 2016 and a new contract would
have to be procured, the Commission appreciated the dedication of MGC staff and would place a
high priority on a management company's commitment to the existing workforce. Upon a motion
made by Commissioner Paterson and duly seconded by Commissioner Stackpole, it was
unanimously VOTED to approve and send the memorandum to all Miacomet Golf employees.
