Topics: Update:
• Ms. McDonough reported that Steve Butler has been in contact with John
Keane regarding the accessible parking spaces at 126 Old South Road. He said
that Mr. Keane had the signage and will be installing it soon.
• Sent a thank you letter to Dr. Robert's for installing their accessible parking
space and signage.
• Sent thank you letter to Easy Street Cantina for rebricking their back patio and
making it completely accessible.
• Becky Hickman was awarded the accessible taxi license.
• The NIR removed the planters from the steps of the JC house and
differentiated the entrance to the patio area.
• Ms. Topham updated the Commission on the posts located at the intersection
of the airport crosswalks and entrance to the daily parking lot. The Airport
Commission's feeling was that paint would not illuminate in the dark.
• Ms. Snow was wondering how visitors know about the accessible taxi. Ms.
Topham thought that the SSA, Visitor's Center, Chamber of Commerce, and
the Inns should all know about the accessible taxi. Ms. McDonough stated that
all the taxi companies are aware of the accessible taxis and could easily pass
the accessible taxi's name to anyone who asked.
• Ms. Snow mentioned that she spoke with the management at Sherburne
Commons regarding the lack of lighting in their parking lot. The light is
motion sensored and does not work all the time. Also, when the sensor is
working, it only illuminates as you approach the door from the direction of the
parking lot. Ms. McDonough will look at this.
• Ms. Rezendes told the Commission that she couldn't see the Elder Service
buzzer in the Landmark House foyer. She spoke with Sherri Goulding
regarding this and Ms. Rezendes suggested that they should do something so
people with sight impairments can see the Elder Service buzzer and the
Landmark office buzzer. Elder Service is open to the public. Ms. McDonough
will look at the buzzers and contact Elder Service and the Landmark office.
Other Business: 4:00
• Ms. Snow mentioned that the Athenaeum has a series of films planned and the
Athenaeum plans to install a hearing loop system for their hearing - impaired
patrons in the near future. Ms. Snow thought that maybe the Athenaeum could
include closed captioning on their digital films until the hearing loop system is
installed.
• Ms. McDonough explained that the NRTA is requesting letters from the public
regarding any additional services that they would like to see implemented for
The Wave and Your Island Ride. The NRTA also requested a letter from our
Commission as well. The Commission members thought that the NRTA could
provide the following additional services:
Many home caregivers for elderly and disabled people do not have their
own transportation and rely on public transportation when available.
They have difficulty finding another source of transportation when The
Wave is no longer operating. Ms. Topham was wondering if Your
Island Ride could possibly transport caregivers to and from the homes
of the elderly and disabled.
Your Island Ride could extend their daily hours, operate seven days a
week, and add more vans for YIR service.
Making reservations for weekend and Monday service could be done
twenty -four hours in advance if someone monitored the phones on the
weekend.
Mr. Rowland proposed some taxi reimbursement plan if the Para
Transit system could not provide services for the elderly and disabled
clients.
Ms. Rezendes said that YIR should extend their services and be more
flexible. They should operate more vans so that clients could participate
in more activities and stay for the whole activity.
Ms. McDonough will send a letter to all the permit holders along with a
comment sheet. They can write their comments regarding any
additional services that they would like to have and send it back to the
NRTA.
4:32 Ms. Snow left the meeting
Executive Session: 4:35
