Conservation Commission Hatchery at Brant Point Water Quality Beach Management The current funding for water quality analysis comes from the Waterways Improvement Fund — derived from the sale of mooring permits, and other fees, and managed by the Marine Department under Sheila Lucey. It was agreed that finding funding for water quality testing is important for all residents and visitors of Nantucket. Water quality needs 1) staff to take the samples, organize the data and make the data public, and 2) Funding to pay for analysis of the samples. The Town does not want to increase staff at this time, but could contract out the program. Propagation of scallops via Tara's Larval Release Program seems to be working and is another program that could be a candidate for increased funding. The Committee decided to recommend pursuing funding for water quality as the high priority item, with funding for propagation as the next item. Since the HSAB had discussed funding for research grants, the Committee felt that we should discuss that at a future meeting. Jeff carlson noted that Human Resources has been awarding grants for a few years, and a number of questions have arisen about how the program is managed. This is not a good time to propose another grant program. Peter Boyce noted that money for scallop and harbor related research grants could come from private funding. It is the 1 private fenders do not want to get locked into supporting every year. New Business: No new business Recap and Items for Next Meeting: Jeff Carlson will put together a summary of the current funding situation for water quality. We will develop rationale at the next meeting. The Subcommittee should put a mission statement before HSAB for approval. The date of the next meeting will be July 19, 2012. Adjournment: 4:57pm Unanimously approved. Next Meeting: July 19, 2012 Respectfully submitted, Peter B. Boyce F4
