She asked for approval of the Minutes for 8 September 2011; Mr. Quigley moved the motion, seconded by Mrs. Van Lieu, voted by all present. Since Mr. Carlson was not present to give his report, the members addressed the lists compiled so far regarding the Nobadeer Beach July 4 issues for the attention of the BOS. There are seven suggestions considered imperative for improving the management of the events, some of which are already being considered by the Police Department. There are also eight others which the members think might be difficult to implement. Mrs. Beck pointed out that there are also responses coming from the public expressing their concerns: (1) a letter of protest from the residents abutting the access to Nobadeer Beach; (2) a response from Mr. Daniel Quigley, aged 27, who asks for no glass on the beach with signs posted at liquor stores and beach access paths clearly stating this prohibition. Mr. Quigley also suggests paying high school /college volunteers to collect trash during the event on the beach, wearing green Clean Team T- Shirts, perhaps funded by interested businesses. A commentator writing in the I &M urges that the police remove all alcohol from the area and have more dumpsters available to collect the trash. A group of mental health professionals serving the island's issues adds their opinion that any allowance of alcohol where underage beachgoers are present should be forbidden. The members decided to alert the Town Manager to what responses they have already accumulated at the request of Mr. Atherton and the Chief of Police. They will meet again at the end of October to send a formal list of reactions to the BOS. They also hope that the BOS will meet with a broad group of interested parties in a round table discussion of improvements of the Nobadeer event. The members offered some changes in the Beach Driving brochure for 2012 and will discuss these and the web site with Mr. Carlson at the next meeting, to be scheduled when Mrs. Beck returns to the island in late October. Mr. Quigley, seconded by Mrs. Van Lieu, moved to adjourn the meeting at 4:00 PM. Respectfully submitted, with notes from Kathleen Van Lieu, Maureen Beck, Chair z a
