2 Fairgrounds Conference Room
8 September 2011
9:00 AM
Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Tom Quigley, Kathleen Van Lieu, Chris Magee;
Natural Resources Coordinator Jeff Carlson
Member Absent: Diane Lang
Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 9:05 AM and asked for approval of the Minutes for 11 August 2011.
With Mr. Quigley's motion, seconded by Mrs. Van Lieu, the members voted approval unanimously.
Mrs. Beck noted that the Committee must start putting the Minutes on the BMAC web site ASAP. Mr.
Carlson offered to supply Mrs. Beck with instructions for doing so, noting that he probably has an
electronic copy of all of them in his time as Beach Manager. He also referred to the Help Desk!
Nantucket. net for further guidance. Mrs. Beck will send by a-mail what years Mr. Carlson may lack.
Mrs. Beck asked for changes in the draft of the Annual Report for BMAC 2010-2011. The members
agreed to eliminate "most important" from the Committee's role and to rephrase amendments to the
Beach Driving Brochure thus: 'The committee completed the annual review of the Beach Driving Map."
All members were in favor of Mrs. Van Lieu's motion, with Mr. Magee seconding, to approve the Annual
Report as changed. A copy of the Report will follow these Minutes and a separate copy will be sent to
the Town Manager.
The members began a discussion of the items on the list being drawn up for the BOS and Chief Pittman
regarding July 4`h events at Nobadeer Beach. Mr. Carlson suggested that the list, already lengthy, be
reduced to no more than seven items because the officials will determine the extent of their usefulness.
Another list of secondary suggestions could be offered depending on the complexity of their usefulness.
The reduced list includes the following seven items:
One-way traffic east on Nonantum to Clifford, then North on Boulevarde
ID checks for all beachgoers
Many more Aorta-potties and trash barrels supplied by the airport !~
Daily trash pick-up
Diane Lang's work with young colleagues on positive social networking
Cooperation from liquor stores ~ '~
Vehicles not allowed on the beach `°
Mr. Carlson's Report: The season is over, the lifeguards are gone, and there was only one bather
needing rescue, as compared to last year's 86. The endangered species operations went well. There
were no problems with beach driving or Western Avenue neighbors. All the beaches around the island
enjoyed their particular visitors with no complaints.
Mrs. Beck requested that one more meeting take place to complete the presentation of the list to the
BOS and the Potice Chief and to examine the Beach Driving Brochure for any changes. She asked the
members to choose quickly by e-mail a Tuesday or Thursday within the next four weeks fora 3:00 PM
meeting.
Respectfully submitted, with notes from Tom Quigley,
Maureen Beck, Chair
