Council for Human Services
January 16, 2008
2 Fairgrounds Road
Attending: Alice McWade, Susan Marques, Greg Mehringer, John Belash, Rachel
Rosen, Maryanne Worth, Ann Medina.
Absent: Eve Messing (attending a dental conference), Mary Kendall, Jackie
McCrady, Nancy Sevrens.
Information sharing:
Sue hasn't gotten together with Jackie yet to discuss Behavioral Health.
Maryanne will help in whatever is needed.
Ali mentioned that two Nantucket Housing Office units became vacant in
November and are still vacant.
Maryanne: the homeless count is scheduled for January 20th and if anyone is
interested in helping out contact Maryanne. A homeless person is anyone living
on a boat, on someone's couch, in a car etc. AA folks are usually helpful in
getting numbers as is the Food Pantry.
There is a great multi-cultural festival scheduled for Saturday March 1St at Cape
Cod Community College.
Plans for the Human Services center are coming along. We have been through
the HDC process. This project will be done in phases. Hopefully there will be a
fundraiser in the spring. There will be housing for employee's of the agencies
and town employees. There will be room for 19 agencies including several from
off-island. Letters of commitment have been received from some agencies. Once
the building is built it will not be difficult to fill. Will there be a meeting space?
Yes, the town has mandated there be a large meeting room in the building. We
are hoping to break ground in 2009.
The last meeting with BL Hathaway went well. Decided on how many focus
groups we would have. John and Ali will work together on Affordable Housing;
Sue and Jackie, Behavioral Health; Maryanne and Greg Economic Self---
Sufficiency; Rachel and Eve, Oral Health.
Sue and Jackie have not met yet; maybe Sue can give Jackie a call to set up
meetings. They can start with the Saltmarsh Senior Center and the schools.
John and Ali will start at Saltmarsh on the affordable housing aspect. Maryanne
is willing to support you as much as she can, supplying materials, copies,
whatever is needed. We can work on this together.
One thing when reviewing this is to take a look at the survey so you have a
consistent message. Think about information for your specific group, it is
important to djgest the information in the survey; what are the needs and who
are the needy
Rachel and Eve went to Hyannis to a meeting with other folks from Cape Cod
and Islands who are working on a Dental Plan. This group has received funding
from United Way and has applied to the Yawkey Foundation for funds. This
funding will be used to hire a coordinator.
There are 5 different health centers one dentist for MVY and Nantucket
The goal is to bring prevention, treatment and workforce (people who want to be
trained) to residents of the Cape and Islands that are health compromised with
no insurance or too little insurance. The funding is to be used to hire a
coordinator to get different participating groups to sign an agreement; to hire BL
Hathaway to continue. A lot of the work has to do with getting dentists to start
taking MassHealth. The good news is that Martha's Vineyard got the hospital to
have two dental chairs in the hospital and two dentists have been hired. We
want someone from Nantucket to be on Executive Council (we may need to form
an entity for this), Maryanne will take suggestions on who should or would like to
be on the steering committee. There should be a dentist on the executive
committee. If Nantucket wants to be represented a memorandum of
understanding will have to be signed by the town. Rachel wants to contact a
woman on MVY to see how they got MGH and the hospital involved; maybe we
can get BL Hathaway to come over and speak to NCH.
What are the resources that come with Robert Macy? DPH is paying for his
services and they are providing a counselor at NBHS. ASAP put in a request for
healthy activities for kids. Rachel suggested the possibility of a radio station at
the High School that would be run by the students and could also be used as a
communication source for the Island in case of an emergency.
The time and date of the next meeting will be determined at a later date.
