COUNCIL FOR HUMAN SERVICES
OCTOBER 10, 2007
2 FAIRGROUNDS ROAD
Attending: Jackie McCrady, Eve Messing, Alice McWade, John Belash, Greg
Mehringer, Maryanne Worth, Ann Medina.
Absent: Mary Kendall, Nancy Sevrens, Rachel Rosen, Susan Marques.
Updates/Sharing:
Maryanne: There will be a workshop in Woburn, MA on the new insurance laws,
immigration, and deferred compensation. The South East Center for Healthy
Communities is holding a great workshop on October 31~ about "Diagnosing the
Health of your Community". There will be workshops on Social Norms, trainings
from AHAC and Health Care of South Eastern MA. Workshop information will be
kept at the CHS office if anyone would like to sign up.
Alice: Park & Rec is associated with the Teen Center and A.T. Wilce, the teen
center coordinator, Karyn Lindsay from ASAP and others were trained as suicide
prevention counselors. This was a two day training session. Jackie informed the
group that NBHS is starting up a group of folks interested in helping with suicide
prevention right now, they will be working with the schools. The people who
went to the training should be included in these discussions.
Maryanne: ASAP is mobilizing the community against substance abuse. This is
one of the main problems mentioned in the 2006 Needs Assessment Survey
along with depression, stress and lack of money. It might be a good idea if a
council member becomes part of this group. The Interfaith Council is considering
having a "Celebration of Life" community forum. John mentioned Rev. Joy
Baumgarten, the interim minister at the Congregational Church, as a great
resource.
Jackie: the Community Foundation is doing it's first round of grants. All Human
Services organizations have been invited to attend on October 23rd. Grant
applications will be handed out, there is approximately $15,000 to $25,000
available. The first round of grants is for Human Services agencies and the
second round may be for the Arts or some other area. The funding for the
foundation comes from individual donors, some donors specify where they want
their money to go. Maryanne mentioned it was the Nantucket Human Services
Center (NHSC) that was instrumental in starting the Foundation by having
George McCulley come here to help get it started. There is a need and people
responded to it. It is exciting to have it get off the ground. The web-site is
www.cfnan.com
Eve: is helping Maryanne with her goals and cutting out newspaper articles that
have to do with Human Services to keep in the Human Service archive
scrapbook.
John: NHSC is inching ahead; they are going through the HDC process. John is
also involved with the 2 Center Street Restoration Project to restore the organ;
they have set a goal and have received matching funds to generate ongoing
maintenance.
Election of chairman: John nominated Alice, Jackie seconded the nomination and
Alice accepted. Alice will chair the meetings and work on agenda with Maryanne.
What about the facilitator training that was mentioned for September? B.L.
Hathaway is available fora 6 hour facilitation training, she has had many years
of training experience. What time/day will be good for everyone? John is away
the week of the 22"d, Thursday night is not good for Ali, nights and weekends
are better for Greg and Eve. Friday night and Saturday morning is probably the
best. November 2"d and 3rd have been set for the trainings. Once the trainings
are completed we will do a session with the council members to facilitate an
action plan for the council on our community meetings. We will target several
meetings if needed for each topic throughout the year.
Goals and Objectives: these will be e-mailed to everyone to go over and make
comments.
There is going to be another'~Know Your Rights" workshop on Monday October
26"d at 5:00 at the Methodist Church. This is the same workshop MIRA did in
August. This workshop will be presented by Camila DeOliveira from Community
Action Council of Cape Cod and the Islands.
Coming up: The homeless count; this is held one day in January. A homeless
person is someone living on someone's couch, on a boat, in a car etc. Usually
these folks come to see Maryanne. People do not realize how many homeless
folks we have here.
The CHS council usually only meets quarterly however, lately we have been
meeting a little more frequently due the Council's work. The next regular
meeting is scheduled for Thursday November 15t" at 8:15 at 2 Fairgrounds Road.
John made a motion to adjourn and Eve seconded. The meeting adjourned at
9:15
