Motion to adjourn
Council for Human Services
April 30, 2007
2 Fairgrounds Road
Attending: Nancy Sevrens, Nancy Funderburg, Alice McWade, Patty Roggeveen,
Maryanne Worth, Ann Medina.
Absent: Rachel Rosen, Mary Kendall, Cheryl Bartlett, John Belash, Michelle
Meckler.
Meeting was called to order.
Updates /Information Sharing: There has been no word on the NaCo grant
application. The Town has recently become a member of Naco which will bring
some great benefits to our community. There are three openings on the Council,
Nancy Sevrens has already re-upped. The other two openings are Nancy
Funderburg and Cheryl Bartlett (who took over for Sheri Hunt). Nancy F. is
debating whether to re-up. The forms have to be in to the BOS by May 14t" and
the appointments will be made at a meeting in June. Patty is resigning form the
NHSC board and she is going to be the BOS representative to the Contract
Review Committee. Patty also stated that Michelle Meckler is probably going to
resign from the Human Services Council because she cannot make it to the
meetings. Patty does know someone who is interested in becoming a member.
The council is mandated to meet quarterly however it has been meeting more
frequently lately. Maryanne asked Patty if she would be interested in continuing
chair because Nancy's schedule is more and more conflicted as her children
become involved in after school activities. Patty will speak to Maryanne about
this later. What about having someone from the immigrant population on the
council? One of the requirements to serve on a Town committee is you must be
a registered voter.
Community Needs Assessment Survey: FinCom wants a presentation brought to
them and Maryanne is working on dates for that. FinCom is paying for the family
centered institute to come over. Possible dates are June 4t", 7t", 21~, or 25~' the
meeting will be at 4:00, Maryanne will let everyone know exactly when the
meeting will be held.
The Helpline is currently being updated and will be on the town's new website in
May.
This Friday, May 4t" the director of Housing and Economic Development is
coming to the island to meet with some folks about housing. There will be 30
people in attendance. This is not open to the public and was by special invitation
only. Maryanne and Andrew Vorce will be attending as well as Patty and Michael
Kopko who will be representing the BOS. Maryanne would like help with a speech
for this meeting. Ali volunteered to help write something.
Ali also attended an Affordable Housing Solutions workshop on the Cape that
was very informative. There were examples of combined income level housing,
small community village style housing, and there were a number of ways they
received financing. Falmouth Housing Authority turned empty stores into housing
units in cooperation with the town's financial help and the housing authority-
public and private funding. Hopefully Mass Housing Partnership will come to the
island soon. They can talk to us about affordable housing and how to create a
housing partnership. Nantucket needs to look at a lot of different solutions to
solve the housing problem. We also need to create a housing partnership for our
community. Currently we have no housing plan or direction. Our neighbors on
the Cape have been very successful and have found some creative solutions. The
Housing Assistance Corporation was involved with Barnstable County in getting
50 habitat houses built. We need to learn from other communities on how to
create affordable housing.
Stephanie and Tracy from the South East Center for Healthy Communities would
be able to offer a training to conduct community input sessions. Some of the
council members have done facilitation in the past. Hopefully the training could
happen in June so we can get started on our focus group meetings over the
course of the next 12 months.
On May 8th, Len Stewart, from Barnstable County Human Services, is coming to
the island. s a region to give a workshop on a 211 information and resource
system for health and human services on the Cape and the Islands. We are
hoping to expand and update the existing data base that the Cape has had for a
few years. Maryanne will ask agencies to send a representative to this meeting.
The meeting will be an hour long possibly 2 sessions 12-1 and 1:30 to 2pm.
There is a great LOHSC forum on Friday May 11th on Responses to Neighborhood
Crime. If anyone is interested in going please let Maryanne know.
The NHSC is looking for a project manager, someone to help coordinate the
project. The project is starting to move along quickly. The lease will be signed
with the Town this month. Neil Parent our architect has developed some
preliminary plans. A preliminary coordinated review is being planned with local
regulatory boards, Mass Historic Commission and the Wampanoag
representative. The video will be out at the end of May to kick off our major
media campaign this summer. Things are rolling along at a very fast pace for the
NHSC group.
We will schedule the next meeting after the new appointments are made in June.
The meeting adjourned at 2:00.
