Worth, Ann Medina.
Absent: Patty Roggeveen, Michelle Meckler, John Belash, Mary Kendall, Cheryl Bartlett
A positive motion to accept the minutes of January 29, 2007 was made, Alice abstained
from voting.
Checking in:
Alice: nothing new to report.
Nancy F.: would like to see on a future agenda `What can or should the Council do that
would help, in some way, the issue of housing: income vs. cost of living'. ASAP is in the
process of hiring a prevention coordinator for the Communities Mobilizing for Change
grant. At NBHS there are so many clients needing a wide range of care.
Rachel: nothing new to report. Rachel was in Iceland recently and was impressed by
the social services there. Education and health care is free.
Nancy S: spoke about the government study she was involved in. topics covered were:
Should the HDC and Planning Commission be appointed by the Selectmen? Should the
title change from Town Administrator to Town Manager? The duties of the current Town
Administrator would not change. Some suggested a Mayor however you cannot have a
mayor without a city and Nantucket is not a city. Nantucket is the only town in
Massachusetts whose HDC is not appointed because it was the first one in the state.
Maryanne: The MIRA Coalition (Mass. Immigrant and Resident Alien Coalition) is
having a big conference on Mary 21~t on immigration issues. There is a Healthy
Community Conference On June 20th which will cover a broad spectrum of issues and
offer a wealth of information. On April 10th The South East Center for Healthy
Communities is offering focus group training however this is the same day town meeting
would be held. Any Council members interested in attending the focus group training
should let Maryanne know.
Patty Roggeveen presented a grant proposal "NaCo" National Association of Counties to
the Board of Selectmen in January. We are still waiting to hear on this regional grant.
We have received a proposal from Alice and Warren Smith from the Family Centered
Institute to conduct focus groups on the community survey results. The proposal is for
$8,000, this does not include transportation (about 20 round trips). There is not enough
money in the HS budget for next year for this. Maryanne will explore other possible
funding resources like Tuppancy etc. Rachel will speak to Bob Felch of the Community
Foundation for possible funds, however a Nantucket non-profit will have to sponsor
them; The Center for Elder Affairs is one option. Another possibility is for some of the
council members to facilitate the forums. We have enough experience in this room;
Nancy F., Rachel, Patty and Maryanne are all trained, skilled facilitators. Although it
would be more effective to use a consultant. Agenda items for next meeting are the
housing education and advocacy and planning our community survey focus groups. The
next meeting is scheduled for Monday April 30th at 12:30.
