HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-11-12 Beach Management Advisory Committee 12 November 2009 Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Tom Dickson, Kathleen Van lieu Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:05 PM and reported that Messrs. Quigley and Magee were ci traveling off island. The Minutes of 29 October were unanimously approved. Since the Beach Man'iijer was not present, the Committee proceeded to address possible changes for the 2010 Beach Drivin~ Brochure. --, Mrs. Van lieu reminded the Committee that she strongly preferred the use of positive rather than <J negative statements in the text accompanying the photos of correct beach driving. It is a scientific fact, she declared, that a positive message always works better than a negative one. :::, Instead of Beach Driving Don'ts as a heading, the members suggested "Beach Driving Courtesy" (or "Etiquette" or simply "Do's") as a replacement. For the first picture, use "Stay in the established tire tracks." For the second picture, use "Stay above the high water mark." For the third picture, use "Respect the dunes. They are fragile." In the corner illustration of Don't... Do... Don't the wiggly tire tracks between the two vehicles should be made straight. The members also hope that new pictures will clarify the statements. Mr. Dickson motioned that we make note of the text changes in the Minutes of the meeting but wait for the Beach Manager and the other two members to comment on them before voting on them. Mrs. Beck and Mrs. Van lieu agreed. Mrs. Beck presented the materials requested by the Town Manager for delivery on November 13 to her office: a listing of the members and officers of the Committee, a report on attendance, and a copy of the Minutes of 29 October 2009 as an illustration of Minutes recorded for each meeting. Mrs. Beck asked for approval of the four goals for BMAC for 2009-2010 as listed in the 29 October Minutes. The members agreed unanimously. She will forward that list to the Town Manager. Mr. Dickson hoped that goal #3 regarding use of public media be followed up as soon as possible. He suggested inviting the Editor of the Inquirer & Mirror to a meeting to discuss some brief ways to address beach issues or notices regularly in the summer issues of the paper. Mrs. Beck will do so after the holidays. The next meeting will be held on December 10 at the Land Bank. The meeting was adjourned with Mr. Dickson making the motion and Mrs. Van lieu seconding. Respectfully submitted, with notes by Tom Dickson, Maureen Beck, Chair
