Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Tom Dickson, Colin Leddy, Kathleen Van Lieu, Tom Qui@y
Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:05 pm. and asked for approval of the Minutes of November 20,
2008. Mr. Leddy wished to clarify remarks he made at that meeting about signage on the Surfside Land
Bank Apthorpe property. It was not the lack of signage he had questioned but the No Trespassing
statement on a sign at an edge of the property. No such wording would be used by the Land Bank. Mrs.
Beck promised to call Bruce Perry about the sign and report at the next meeting. Mr. Leddy also asked
that the term 'parking lot' be added to the reference to Fisherman's Beach in the Minutes. Mr. Quigley
moved that the Minutes be tabled until the next meeting. The members agreed.
Mrs. Beck noted that Mr. Carlson has delayed the BMAC request to the BOS for increased fees on any
beach driving permits for rental vehicles.
Mr. Quigley asked why BMAC is not included in beach driving permit discussions with the Town. Mrs.
Beck replied that BMAC forwards it suggestions each year to the Beach Manager, who presents them to
the Town Manager.
The members next offered additions to the Beach Manager's matrix for the Coastal Management Plan
draft as follows:
Under Habitat add beach driving and endangered species to areas of concern and include BMAC
in agencies?
Under Coastal Hazards add dead or dying animals/ mammals and include Health Department
and Marine Mammal group in agencies
Question of redundancy in Public Access wording; also should BMAC be included there as an
agency?
These comments will be forwarded to the Beach Manager.
Mrs. Beck wishes to ask the Beach Manager if she may discuss some additions to the web site with Linda
Rhodes. She asked the members to look at the site and offer comments. The members moved
unanimously for this request. She also asked the members if they would like to study beach erosion on
the island, using input to the Surfside Area Plan for illustrating and explaining certain areas of beach
loss. Mrs. Van Lieu would like to include a study of types of beach nourishment now available. She
pointed to Cisco and the end of Hummock Pond Road where some drainage correction might be helpful.
Mrs. Beck agreed that perhaps BMAC could come up with some policy statements or recommendations
regarding beach nourishment and erosion. The members moved unanimously to ask the Beach
Manager about this undertaking.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 pm. The next meeting will take place on January 8, 2009.
Respectfully submitted, with notes from Tom Dickson,
Maureen Beck, Chair
