Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Colin leddy, Tom Quigley, Kathleen Van gteu; Beach Manager Jeff Carlson 2':: c:::J <:: J -.J Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:00 pm and asked for approval of the Minutes of 18 Sep!:fmber 2008. With Mrs. Van Lieu making the motion and Mr. Quigley seconding, the Minutes were :.~ unanimously approved. ::j Mr. Carlson addressed the topics discussed at the meeting on September 29 of Town officials involved in beach operations. The condition of the public beach at Madaket has worsened; the drop from the end of Madaket Road is now very steep; objects from structures which have been lost to the tides protrude at low tide from the sand, a hazard for swimmers. The Beach Manager and the Harbormaster believe the beach will not recover satisfactorily before the next summer season. After discussion the meeting agreed to announce the closing of Madaket Beach until further notice. Mr. Carlson went on to say that henceforth the July 4th holiday operations at Nobadeer Beach would be regarded as an event rather than as an ordinary beach day. Dumpsters will be brought to the bluff temporarily for trash and recycling; trash bags will be distributed; patrols will be increased to prepare for the anticipated larger crowds. Mr. Carlson also noted that henceforth he would be responsible for Mr. Powers' beach raking contract and the marine mammals operations as well as the lifeguards. Furthermore, the emergency location signs for the beaches are being redone to look more official and visible. Mrs. Beck stated that Chief Pittman at the meeting announced that his officers took a count of the vehicles at Nobadeer during the summer and learned that rental vehicles far outnumbered private ones. The members agreed with the Chief that perhaps the fee for rental cars using the beaches should be raised. Mr. Carlson will examine the present web site for Beach Management information and bring it up to date in conjunction with other means of communication about beach news, like the papers and tourist notices. He agreed with Mr. Collier that the planting and dune rebuilding program should be reinstituted at Nobadeer; he will look into sand and grass components for next year and restore the damaged posts at the bluff. The members determined that the next meetings of BMAC would be on November 6 and 20, at either of which Harbormaster Fronzuto will be the guest speaker. Then they discussed possible changes in the Beach Driving Brochure} on which they will decide at the next meeting on October 16. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 pm. Respectfully submitted, with notes from Tom Quigley} Maureen Beck, Chair
