Beach Management Advisory Committee
Land Bank Conference Room
18 September 2008
4:00 PM
Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Tom Dickson, Tom Quigley, Kathleen Van Lieu;
Guest: Cormac Collier
Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:00 pm and asked for approval of the Minutes of the 11 September
meeting. Mrs. Van Lieu noted that in those Minutes she was referring to a conversation with Emily
Molden, not Cormac Collier. Mr. Quigley motioned that the Minutes be accepted with a correction of
the name, and Mrs. Van Lieu seconded his motion, which was passed unanimously.
Mr. Quigley noted that he was concerned about the absence of the signs that had been installed earlier
on the beaches by the Beach Manager for public safety and direction. He hopes to check where signs
are missing when he accompanies Mr. Carlson on some of his beach rounds.
Mrs. Beck greeted Cormac Collier, whom the members invited to discuss a reestablishment of the
Nobadeer bluff efforts to buildup and protect the dune there. Mr. Collier produced old photos which
showed the dune in earlier stages of erosion and then later during efforts to plant dune grass and posts
to prevent parking and driving over the bluff. He recommended bringing in extra sand to create a single
pedestrian pathway down to the beach, similar to that at Surfside Public Beach. He envisioned a
combination of the posts connected by cables with snow fencing for the path. He mentioned that the
Land Council has money for purchasing the grass.
Mrs. Beck thanked Mr. Collier for his advice and promised to relay his suggestions to the Beach Manager
for consideration. She also said that she thought it was time to ask the Harbormaster, with whom the
Beach Manager works, for his views and for what, if any, assistance he could provide for such a project if
the Beach Manager agrees to it.
Mrs. Beck asked the members for dates to meet in October. Besides October 2, they decided that
October 16 would fit their schedules. Mrs. Beck then stated that she hoped to begin scrutiny of the
Beach Driving brochure during those meetings. Because Mr. Quigley and Mrs. Van Lieu did not have
brochures or BM Plans yet, she promised to get them to them before the next meeting.
The next meeting will be at 4:00 pm on October 2.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 pm.
