Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Colin Leddy, John Johnson; SeleCOOan 1lt1Jtfn.~ei~~tS7 Mrs. Beck opened the meeting at 4:15 pm and asked for the approval of the Minutes for 22 May 2008, which the members voted unanimously. TO V,"\ (:..- In the absence of the Beach Manager, Mrs. Beck explained that Mr. Carlson had officially closed Madaket and Cisco beaches with signs, that Mr. Manchester was holding off putting porta-potties at Madaket until June 15 to see whether the beach would build up again, that she had asked the Beach Manager if he had notified the many different entities on island who needed to be alert to the closings. Mrs. Beck also reported that vandals had pulled out two of the concrete barriers on the Nobadeer Beach bluff at the start of the holiday weekend. Mr. Leddy, who noticed the gap, alerted the Beach Manager, Mrs. Beck, and the DPW about the trouble. The DPW, with Mr. Leddy's help, jerry-rigged a barrier at that spot for the rest of the week-end. On Tuesday Mrs. Beck called and thanked Mr. Willett for the DPW's quick assistance. She hopes the posts will be re-installed as soon as possible. Mr. Leddy reported that nine barrels have been placed for trash and recycling at Nobadeer. He also reported that beach traffic on the week-end indicated many vehicles were speeding and without permits. Mrs. Beck reported that she had brought the illegal Larrabee towing stickers to the Police, who promised to look into his use of emergency signs and beach signs for posting his phone number. They acknowledged to Mrs. Beck that they, like BMAC, have had arguments with him in the past. Selectman Reinhard suggested checking with the Marine Department, which also has some enforcement power over the beaches and may be able to assist in this violation. The members agreed to postpone a discussion of the Endangered Species Program and the TV projects until more members and the Beach Manager were present. Mrs. Beck offered a draft of a BMAC letter to the I&M appealing to beach goers to help protect the beaches during the busy summer season. The members and Mr. Reinhard moved to send it to the Town Manager for approval and then to the paper. Mrs. Beck addressed the Town Manager's recommendation that because of the heavy work load in the summer, BMAC change its summer meetings from weekly to monthly during that period. The members moved to meet on the third Thursday of each month at the same time and place: June 19, July 17, and August 21. Any other meetings will be posted according to Town procedure. When Selectman Reinhard commented about the beach bluff drops and the closings, Mr. Johnson mentioned that the parking at the end of the Cisco Road might confuse beachgoers when they saw the beach closing sign at that spot. He also referred to the need for a beach clean-up from the end of Madaket Road to Smith's Point, where low tide revealed old septic and building trash buried in the sand. Homeowners should probably have cleaned that debris up. Mrs. Beck reminded members that the terms of Beck, Dickson, Ray, and Leddy were up for re- application in June and hoped they would continue to serve. The meeting was adjourned at 5:10 pm. The next meeting will be June 19, 2008. Respectfully submitted, with notes from John Johnson, Maureen Beck, Chair
