The meeting opened with the members reviewing May's minutes, which were
unanimously approved.
Topics:
. One North Beach Street
Dick mentioned that there is no disabled parking at One North Beach Street.
There is a new commercial building there with limited parking. Dick believed
that they received a parking variance from the Zoning Board so that is the
reason for the limited parking. However, if the building is zoned for 15 spaces
or more, then according to the Access Code, at least one space must be an
accessible space. The Commission noted that when a parking variance is
granted then the disabled community actually loses a disabled parking space.
So, I will contact Bernie and Tom Hopkins and ask them how the disabled
parking space code is affected when a parking variance is granted.
. Coffin Park
Brenda spoke with Jimmy Manchester and he said that Coffin Park will be
completely accessible in July. The Commission members were wondering if
woodchips are an appropriate accessible surface. Brenda will talk to Tom
Hopkins about accessible surfaces.
. CPC Funds
Mickey inquired about the possibility of applying for CPC funds for
accessible projects here on Nantucket. Linda said that funds are allocated to
projects involving historical preservation, housing, or open space and
recreation. We can get more information from Ken Beaugrand of Nantucket
Real Estate.
. 'Sconset Post Office
The new sidewalk at the 'Sconset PO does not have a curb cut. Linda will
contact the attorney for the post office construction and discuss this problem.
. Main Street
The DPW plans to repair the north sidewalk from Center Street to Federal
Street. Mickey spoke with Mohammad about possibly raising the sidewalk a
few inches. This, along with other renovations, would help to create access to
the businesses that abut that portion of the sidewalk. Brenda will send a
follow-up letter to Mohammad reiterating our request.
. Variance Application for 15 Commercial Street
Mickey excused himself from this portion of the meeting and the remaining
members reviewed his variance application, which they unanimously
approved to send the AAB a letter supporting the variance request.
. Other
The Commission wants to revisit Tresses Day Spa and see if there is any way
that this building can be accessible.
Cumberland Farms is in the planning stage of making their building
accessible.
Curb cuts at Landmark House, mid-Island, Stop & Shop, and the pharmacy
should be on the priority list of curb cuts.
