Mickey updated the members on the DOl's recent visits to Nantucket. Tish Connolly, an assistant U.S. attorney with the DOl, was going to propose to her supervisor to have six Nantucket businesses comply with the accessibility regulations. If this initiative goes forward, then she would consider the Commission's suggestions as to which businesses we would like to see accessible. The following is the "Suggested List" of businesses that the Commission reviewed and discussed for accessibility: 1. Pacific National Bank, Main Street Signage at the main entrance directing disabled customers to the accessible entrance on Upper Main Street Signage on the accessible entrance door Policy for accommodating a disabled customer Linda will contact Joel Brown concerning this 2. If the DOJ actually contacts some Nantucket businesses regarding accessibility, then Linda remarked that we should create a Public Service Announcement in the newspaper giving the community a heads-up that the DOJ may contact your business. . Mickey asked the members to look at the businesses on the list and make any comments concerning these businesses at our next meeting. . Phil suggested that Mickey attend a BaS meeting and let them know what the DOJ is doing on the Island. It would be a way of making the Commission visible to the community. Phil also suggested that Mickey could report the Commission's activities on an annually or semi-annually basis to the BaS. . We are looking for new Commission members and Brenda will send letters to some permit holders and see if anyone is interested in becoming a member of our Commission. Linda wanted to make sure that the Selectman's office was aware that our commission must have a majority of disabled members. . Phil requested a copy of the ADA's definition of disability. He feels that he may meet the requirements of being disabled, which would give our Commission one more disabled member. . Phil commented on Hyannis's RTA service. He loves it could be a model for the NRTA. . Linda updated us on the sidewalk at 149 Main Street, Dick Caton's residence. In the past, Linda spoke John Smith, Mohammad, and Jeff Willet concerning bricking that piece of sidewalk. (Linda also mentioned that Nanette Cardos also spoke with these gentlemen.) She was told there wasn't any manpower or money to do the job. So Linda contacted Charles Lewis and asked him if the DPW donated the bricks, would he brick the sidewalk at a discounted rate. Linda said that the owners must pay for their own sidewalk repairs. Brenda McDonough, Facilitator Our Next Meeting will be on November 1st, 2006 GO PATRIOTS!
