Community Pool: (.oj
If an elderly person needed a companion to accompany him or her in the p'tSlol and
pool area, does the Community School need to provide the companion for this
person? The Commission discussed an elderly person's right to utilize the pool and
wondered whether the school or the individual is responsible for the companion. It
was suggested that we contact Massachusetts Office on Disability to see if the pool is
responsible to provide companions when needed and contact the Community School
to see what was the written policy, if any, regarding a companion.

Anonymity:
Kim suggested that whenever someone contacts the Commission seeking help
with their personal situation, that the commission should keep the person's name
anonymous. Since our meetings are open to the public, it may be better not to
publicize people's names.
Brotherhood Restaurant:
Ted Burnham applied for a variance for the Brotherhood's vertical, interior lift
and the AAB denied the variance. He was granted a hearing before the AAB in
January. He was seeking the Commission's support for this variance. Ted told the
Commission that only the staff would be able to use the interior stairs. Mickey
mentioned that both the public and staff should have access to the stairs, and a lift
would still be required. Ted said that there was no way to incorporate a lift. Phil
questioned whether a dumbwaiter could replace the stairs. Ted did not think that was
feasible. Linda motioned to support the variance, Mickey chose to abstain from
voting, and Dick seconded the motion and so it was voted. Brenda suggested after the
vote to install the proper signage so the public would not utilize the stairs and have
the owners give us their word that only staff would use these stairs.
Bamboo Supper Club:
Mickey excused himself when Ted started to discuss the Bamboo Supper Club
because Mickey was involved in a previous renovation project of the building. Since
that renovation, the building has been home to several different businesses. The
Bamboo Supper Club utilizes both the first and second stories of the building without
a certificate of occupancy and now needs one to continue business. The building does
not comply with the AAB's 521 CMR and Ted was seeking a variance for access to
the second story. He stated that all services that Shannon provides on the second level
would also be available on the first level, which will be completely accessible. If
Shannon expands in the future, he will then make the second story completely
accessible. Dick motioned to support the variance, which Kim seconded and so it was
voted.
