concerns ~
2. Dick will contact Mary Lancaster about our article in the Independent
3. Contact Liz at Libby's office about any progress regarding an operator
for the accessible taxi. The Commission would like to expedite the
selection process for the accessible taxi operator. The Commission
also thought that a mass mailing would expedite the process and the
Commission would gladly help out with the mass mailing. However,
the Commission voted to postpone contacting the Selectmen regarding
the selection process until after October's meeting.
4. Contact Flint Ranney and the SSA's acting General Manager
regarding our disabled policy. Also contact Andy Krickle and discuss
Martha's Vineyard SSA policy.

. Check to see if the Unitarian Church accessible parking space is properly
striped.
. Check Town Annex Building's accessible space and elevator.
. Phil Gallagher suggested that we publicly thank the DPW at a Selectmen's
meeting for the curb cuts and walkways that the DPW have installed on the
Island.
. Order extra 521 CMR's for business owners and professionals who inquire
about accessibility codes and have not been introduced to the 521 CMR.
. Phil believed that Austin, Texas had a wonderful guide for disabled residents
and visitors. Check to see if the guide does exist and request several copies.
. Talk to Beach Management Committee about portable, accessible walkways
(such as the walkways used for the POP'S concert) along the public beaches.
. Check the 'Sconset pathway.
. Ted Burnham, engineer for The Jewel of the Isle renovation, attended our
meeting because he wanted to discuss the Jewel's variance application that he
was planning to submit to the AAB. Mickey is involved in this project so he
had to excuse himself from this portion of the meeting. Ted reviewed the
plans with the Commission and discussed the obstacles that he faced
regarding access to the building.
1. A second story will be created and utilized as office and retail space.
Ted believes that it is not feasible to install an elevator in this building
given the existing, relatively small interior space.
2. Winthrop Management Company owns the Island Pursuits' building,
which is the building on the west side of Jewel of the Isle. Winthrop
would not approve of an access ramp between the two buildings.
3. The Jewel will provide access to part of their first level by lowering
their existing first floor. The accessible entrance would then be their
main entrance. There is a raised area in the back of the first level,
which would not be accessible.
4. The Jewel of the Isle is applying for a variance to seek relief from
access to the second floor and access to the back of the first floor.
5. Linda motioned to write a letter in support of the variance, which Dick
seconded and so it was voted. Mickey returned to the meeting after the
vote.
. Ted Burnham also proposed to install an exterior lift at 34 Center Street,
which would provide access to the basement commercial level and also the
raised first level. This lift would require a variance. Linda motioned to write a
letter in support of the variance, which Dick seconded, and so it was voted.
