Accessible Taxi:
. Dave Dennis purchased a surplus, wheelchair accessible vehicle from the
NRTA. Dave realized there was an opportunity to provide a taxi service for
disabled people with the purchase of this vehicle. The Commission members
support this accessible taxi and set forth to compose a proposal, which will be
sent to the Board of Selectmen.
o After some discussion, the Mickey motioned to request that the Board
of Selectmen increases the total amount of taxi licenses by one; this
new license will be exclusively for the operation of a wheelchair-
accessible taxi. To be profitable, this taxi will operate seven-days-a-
week as a regular taxi service, accommodating disabled and
nondisabled customers alike. The motion was seconded and it was so
voted.
o The Commission wanted several things included in the letter such as
the following:
Mention what transportation services are currently available for
disabled people
There is no on-demand taxi service
Attach the information from the American With Disabilities Act
Compliance Guide
Weare endorsing the policy; we are not necessarily endorsing
Dave Dennis to receive this additional license
There is a vehicle on Island and available for purchase
o The Commission wants to recommend some regulations governing the
accessible taxi.
o The Commission thought that letters of support from various
committees, commissions, organizations and businesses would add
some leverage to our proposal.
. Cecil inquired about who has the authority to issue tickets to drivers violating
the accessible parking spaces. The Commission requested that Brenda train
the Commission members on the Volunteer Parking Patrol at April's meeting.
. Brenda was asked to go the schools and check all the automatic door openers.
