The Minutes were approved ~rnmous; after Mr. Leddy clarified the distinction between Fisherman's Beach and the=Eand Bant..; Beach directly east of it. 0 =a ;0 ~ N N Mrs. Beck assured the Committee that Town Manager Gibson would be meeting with them on October 18 and would be bringing a statement of the Beach Driving Permit Account. She also called attention to the new course at the Nantucket New School on ocean circulation around the island. The Beach Manager reported that the intense activity of the summer was over and that currently he was spending time drawing up reports and summations of the season's Issues. Members wondered why the beaches were still being raked so long after the season was over, particularly since they had not always been cleaned in July and August. Mrs. Beck suggested that Visitors' Services be asked that question by those interested. Mr. Carlson mentioned that the cut at Smith's Point had filled back in slightly. Mrs. Beck asked about who was patrolling the beaches now that the ATV's were gone. Mr. Carlson is still doing random checks. There do not seem to be noticeable dune driving violations at present. Mrs. Beck asked about Chief Pittman's remarks at the last BOS meeting regarding the closure of the Loring property to A TV patrols. Mr. Carlson explained the closing was on her private property, and that some people ask that ATV's not drive on their property in order to access the beach; the patrols, therefore, must go around it to reach the beach. Mrs. Beck reviewed what would be the points of discussion for the Town Manager's visit on the 18th: the 18 agencies involved in Beach Management the possibility of combining those common interests the Beach Manager's awareness of this multiplicity of operations the importance of the agencies involved being aware of each other's work negligence of maintenance of beaches for pristine appearance the cleaning of the beaches - Mr. Powers only? the pay phones that do not work the need for better trash removal on the beaches and at access points Mr. Johnson suggested that a high school student perhaps could be hired to work on trash removal during the summer. Mr. Carlson replied that the town's hourly wage of $13 does not compete with commercial pay of $22 per hour. He reminded the members that the Marine Coastal Department's total budget is only $76,000. Members agreed that in order to guarantee a first class tourist economy, the beaches require money spent on their careful maintenance and that funds for that operation could come perhaps from the Beach Driving Permit account. Mr. Johnson announced that he would be leaving for the winter after the meeting on the 18th. Mrs. Beck announced that Allen Reinhard, Selectman and Middle Moors Manager and Chair of the Rights of Way Committee will come to BMAC on November 7. The Harbormaster and Officer Carnevale should also be invited for a visit. BMAC will begin to address revisions to the Beach Driving Map for 2008 at the end of October. Please note that the October 25 meeting will be held in the Town Building in the BOS Conference Room. Mr. Carlson proposed that starting in November BMAC return to meeting every other week. The members agreed to meetings the first and third Thursdays of the winter months. Respectfully submitted, with notes from John Johnson, Maureen Beck, Chair
