Beach Management Advisory Committee
Land Bank Conference Room
16 November 2006
4:00 pm
Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Colin Leddy; Beach Manager Jeff Carlson
Lacking a quorum, Mrs. Beck opened the informal conversation at 4:10. No Minutes
from 2 November were approved since neither Mr. Johnson nor Mrs. Ray was present.
Mr. Carlson has traced the whereabouts of Eileen Powers, who handles the annual
printing of the Beach Driving Brochure. Mrs. Beck will contact her with revisions in
hand and arrange for the printing delivery date.
Mrs. Beck circulated data on the BMAC budget from Connie Voges. Since Chief
Pittman has yet to send on the data on beach driving permits and violations, she hopes
that both the finances and the numbers can be discussed at the November 30 meeting.
She also hopes that at that meeting the Committee can schedule the next meetings for the
winter months.
Mr. Leddy is concerned about three things: driving tracks in the dunes along the South
Shore; the continuing breakdown of the steps at Fisherman's Beach; and the occasional
but persistent indieations of fires set for gatherings in that area.
Mr. Carlson agreed with Mr. Leddy's observations. He will prod the DPW once again to
repair the steps. He constantly has to restore fence posts on eroding beaches where no
driving should be happening at all. However, where some beach looks eroded, it is not;
because of increased wave energy from recent storms, the beach is actually building up at
a steeper slope behind the dunes as sand is being blown up there. As to fires, he deplores
the few violations but cannot be super-diligent about detecting each one because of the
times they occur. He hopes to begin systematic dune profiling at the beginning ofthe
new year.
