HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-10-26 Beach Management Advisory Committee Land Bank Conference Room 26 October 2006 4:00 pm Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Colin Leddy, John Johnson; Beach Manager Jeff Carlson The meeting convened at 4:10 pm. Mrs. Beck noted that the previous Minutes of28 September had been approved by individual response when received by each member. She also noted that this meeting, the only one scheduled for October, was resuming the weekly meetings for the present until the winter's schedule of work and interviews could be determined. Since Mr. Tim Psaradelis, scheduled to discuss possible beach cleaning sites for the High School Surfing Team, did not appear, Mr. Carlson reported that the beaches were surprisingly clean everywhere, that the few spots of trash could easily be cleaned up in a matter of minutes. He suggested instead that the Team work on communicating with fellow students the importance of keeping the beaches clean and respecting beach regulations. Mrs. Beck will convey this message to Mr. Psaradelis. Mr. Carlson reported how quiet the beach activity was; in fact, at the recent opening of the Town ponds to the sea few islanders were present compared to attendance in recent years. Mr. Leddy presented three concerns: the continuing neglect by the DPW of repairs necessary at Fisherman's Beach staircase; some indications of small fires on the beach at Nobadeer; and a purple van unloading trash bags onto Nobadeer Beach property. Mrs. Beck will resume calls to the DPW about the stairs. She urged others to do so as well and to watch out for the purple van at beach sites. The Committee took a final look at revisions of the beach map for 2007. Mr. Carlson is deciding on a new photo for its cover. Mrs. Beck will contact the designer for the printing. Mr. Carlson suggested Mrs. Beck ask Chief Pittman for information on the budget, number of beach driving permits issued and tickets written for beach violations. The Committee directed Mrs. Beck to write a draft of its recommendation that easements on private beach property given to the Town not allow any commercial use of that . property. They recommend that it follow reasons cited in Torn Quigley'sl~tter to t~ BOS opposing such a praetice. They will discuss this draft at the 2 Nove~~r meetiEg and then forward a final version to the BOS. ;: c-:J ..... co Dates for future meetings in November and December were discussed.
