Beach Management Advisory Committee
Town Small Conference Room
19 April 2007
4:00 pm
Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Tom Dickson, Edie Ray, Colin Leddy;
Beach Manager Jeff Carlson
Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:05 pm. The Minutes of 12 April 2007 were
approved unanimously.
The Beach Manager reported that the Sconset Bluffwas badly eroded in last weekend's
nor'easter. The Bluff Project staffwill be cleaning up the debris from the beaches aiiil
broken terraces from Great Point to Nobadeer and Surfside over the nexf!\vo week.~ The
damage may change the Project's approach to creating beach sand by er~ihg contaited
terraces. The ConCom will continue its hearings with the Project on 25 ~pril and later.
Smith's Point has again broken off from Esther Island. The cut is deep e!!ough to appear
to continue the separation for the near future. The Galls were also hit ha'rd by the ~rm.
Hummock Pond is still scheduled for opening 20 April despite the beach changes. ~
house fell over the bluff out on Sheep's Pond Road. U1
Mr. Leddy noticed that some posts along Fisherman's Beach and westward have
reappeared above the sand, perhaps, because of the wind blowing the sand off the surface
of the beach. Some ofthe members think those posts were installed to mark the erosion
forty years ago.
Mrs. Beck reminded the meeting that Mr. Tim Psaradelis and his High School Surf Club
will clean the Surfside Beach areas on Sunday, April 22, Earth Day. The DPW will pick
up the recycled and bagged trash at the Public Beach Parking Lot at noon.
The members began discussion oftheir drafts for a letter to the Town Manager regarding
long-term priorities for BMAC. Several suggestions were put forward, and the members
agreed to continue to review the drafts at the next meeting, 26 April.
Mrs. Ray had to leave early to attend to a sick seal and will continue her suggestions at
home and send them to Mrs. Beck before the next meeting. Mrs. Beck will distribute
copies of Mr. Dickson's and Mr. Leddy's drafts to the members before the next meeting
also.
A question to ponder: How can litterers be educated to stop?
I"he Beach Manager will check on the number of beach permits sold to rental vehicles.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 pm.
Respectfully submitted, with notes from Tom Dickson,
Maureen Beck, Chair
