12 April 2007
4:00 pm
Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Tom Dickson, Edie Ray, Colin Leddy; Beach
Manager Jeff Carlson
Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:05 p.m. The Minutes of April 5, 2007 were
approved. Mr. Dickson and Mrs. Ray approved the Minutes of 8, 22, and 29 March; Mr.
Leddy asked to be given a little more time to look at them. The members and the Beach
Manager confirmed that their priority lists for current and future beach management tasks
were in order.
Mrs. Beck announced that Mr. Psaradelis had notified her that the High ScJ;1001 Sur~lub
_.j"'-
would be undertaking a clean-up project on April 22 and would welcom~ contact =-=
person at the DPW to help with trash pick-up. Mr. Leddy hoped that the:~lub as wen as
the High School would consider this project as a part ofthe school's compulsory 0;
Community Service component. Mr. Dickson remarked that the Vineyartl's recent pliljor
beach clean-up had received considerable publicity. He will contact Dan Tridell at NPR
Station WNAN to mention the Surf Club's project. Mr. Carlson recommended that::fmy
of the south shore beaches were in need of trash removal. Mrs. Beck has invited Mr~
Psaradelis to attend the BMAC meeting on 19 April to discuss his plans.
Mrs. Ray briefly reviewed the first meeting of the Conservation Commission on 11 April
with the Sconset Bluff Project. She was pleased to see the local fishermen organized and
making a good presentation about their concerns with the proposal. Mr. Dickson
wondered if matters of cause and effect were addressed during that meeting. Mrs. Ray
replied that there would be two more hearings with the ConCom, each addressing specific
concerns. Mr. Carlson did not attend that meeting but had had a discussion with the
principals regarding changes that need to be made in the plan.
Mr. Carlson also mentioned that ifhis position were to be attached to the Marine
Department's staff salaries, the BMAC budget could gain the amount of his salary for
clean-up and other management operations. He asked that the Committee think about
this possibility as they prepare a letter for the Town Administrator addressing their
priorities.
Mrs. Ray is anxious to get a handle on the budget, learning just what the revenue pays
for. Mr. Leddy suggested that, should the revenue from permit sales decline, the Police
budget take on items like ATV patrols and equipment.
Mrs. Beck announced that the Town is undertaking a new Virtual Website, which will
cover more thorougWy the information about each facet of Town operations. She asked
if the Committee wished to have their e-mails listed in BMAC's site. The members
declined to do so, and Mr. Carlson stated that only Town e-mail addresses were
necessary.
Mrs. Beck noted that the next meeting on April 19 will take place at the Town Building's
small conference room. Each member is requested to draft a letter to the Town Manager
based on our priority lists submitted and discussed in recent meetings. Mrs. Beck
suggests that the overall theme ofthe letter address our conviction that the beaches are
the main attraction in the island's flourishing tourist economy and must, therefore,
receive serious attention and management in order to insure their excellent condition,
cleanliness, and comfort.
Respectfully submitted, with notes from Tom Dickson,
Maureen Beck, Chair.
