Beach Management Committee
5-11-06
4 pm at the BOS Small Conference Room
Committee Members present: Maureen Beck, Edie Ray, Colin Leddy
Guests: Beach Manager Jeff Carlson, John Johnson
Mrs. Beck convened the meeting at 4:13 pm. A discussion followed concerning the
disappearance of fencing and signing at a strip of Miacomet Beach too narrow for
driving. At risk is new dune grass planted in front of a house on the beach. The Beach
Manager will talk to Jeff Pollock at the Land Bank about replacing the materials. John
Devaney, a resident of Mia cornet East, has offered the Land Bank some posts for the
replacement.
Mr. Leddy reported that surfers were trampling the new grass planted at Nobadeer Beach
to help restore the dune at the bluff Mrs. Beck added that cars were still parking at the
bluff despite new No Parking signs along the approach. She has thanked the DPW for
the new signs, which also point to parking in the new Land Bank lot only, and asked the
DPW for two extra No Parking signs to be installed on the posts at the pedestrian
entrance to the beach. There is also evidence of A TV driving on that beach. In order to
prevent further damage, the Committee emphasized the necessity of ticketing violators at
Nobadeer as soon as the patrols begin.
Mrs. Beck announced that the High School Surfing Club is organizing a massive beach
clean-up on June 3 and is presently seeking support from Town Departments and local
businesses. Mr. Leddy will follow up their progress.
Mr. Carlson reported that he already has had to talk to dog owners about their unleashed
dogs at Jetties Beach.
Beach wheelchairs will be available at the Parks & Recreation Office for the
handicapped. By the end of May one will be permanently installed at the Surfside
conceSSIon.
Beach Manager Carlson has fixed the fencing for the plovers at Jetties. He has made an
inventory ofthe available equipment for his work. The plover monitors arrive May 20.
Mrs. Ray advised that he give careful reports to the Federal and State environmental
offices regarding our compliance with their regulations. He will get in touch with Chief
Pitrnann and Jimmy Manchester to be sure he is included in the training sessions for A TV
officers and lifeguards.
Mrs. Beck will call ChiefPitrnann to ask if Officer Carnevale will again be in charge of
the ATV patrols. She will invite the Chief and/or the officer in charge to the meeting
May 18.

Mr. Leddy emphasized the importance of the patrols being well schooled in beach
regulations and even-handed in approaching beachgoers.
In re-writing the Mission Statement Mrs. Beck suggested that the 1999 and 2005 Mission
Statements be combined and edited for brevity and clarity, that four major points could
constitute the statement.
The Committee discussed briefly the roles and rights ofNantucketers in helping preserve
the beaches and respect the Plan. Mrs. Beck noted that public awareness regarding the
fragile condition of the beaches is becoming more noticeable.
Mrs. Ray motioned, Mr. Leddy seconding, adjournment at 5:10 pm.
