HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-06-15 Beach Management Advisory Committee Thursday, 15 June 2006 at 4 pm at the Land Bank Conference Room Members Present: Maureen Beck, Chair, Torn Dickson, Edie Ray, and Colin Leddy Guest: John Johnson The meeting convened at 4:02 pm. The Minutes of 1 June were approved, with Mr. Dickson's motion and Mrs. Ray's second. Because the 8 June meeting was cancelled, there were no minutes to approve. The discussion of7 June with the BOS re: the revision ofBMAC's Mission Statement was reviewed. BOS requested that the words ''will strive" be substituted for the word "hope," and the Mission Statement thus revised was duly resubmitted. The Beach Manager's Report: The training sessions of the ATV police patrols emphasized the following: The patrols should not chase people should not drive in the dunes or the grass will be given one chance only to perform their jobs as described will try to cover the gap between shift changes will vary their routes but when in pairs stay within sight of each other. Mr. Leddy asked about patrols keeping a distance from people and a low noise and speed level. Mr. Carlson replied: 5 MPH only except for 15 MPH maximum where there are no people. Police sergeants may do spot checks on ATV performance. Mrs. Beck: Did the Beach Manager speak to the ATV group? Mr. Carlson: Yes. The two will work independently but must come when he calls. He will be deputized soon. Mr. Leddy will report to Mr. Carlson or Officer Carnevale anything amiss. Mrs. Beck advised his keeping a list of what he sees. Birds: Mr. Carlson reported imminent fledging for one chick at Jetties. The Wachovia parties there this next week will be carefully monitored. At Smith's Point there are two hatchings so far, two imminent, 162 terns in the area. No vehicles past the fence boundaries. The gatehouse to open with staffing if possible. Nobadeer: Mr. Dickson reported new dune grass at Nobadeer destroyed by drive-overs. Mr. Carlson will check and extend some sort of fence protection. Mr. Leddy noted more parking alongside the new parking lot rather than in it. ; Other Business: Mr. Leddy reported good work on the June 3 beach cleanup by the High School Surf Club. SAT exams may have limited student participation, but DPW took away 6 full trash bags. New barrels for recyclables and trash now at Nobadeer and perhaps soon at all other beaches. Mrs. Beck will provide the Committee with the Building Department's letter of allowance for new road eut offNonantum by a property owner. Mrs. Ray asked about the schedule for Lifeguard Training and the crowded trades parking at Monomoy public beach access. Beach permits sold to date: 2047 - about usual- no breakdown yet as to number of early $50 permits and later $100 permits. Mrs. Ray and Mr. Carlson commended Environmental Police Officer Belanger's assistance in their work. BMAC will invite his comments once the summer schedule is in place. Mrs. Beek distributed directions for preparing BMAC's annual 2005-2006 report. She hopes for completion before the end of July.
