In the Fall/Winter of 2017/2018 a Town sewer line will be installed in your street and a service connection will be run
from the main sewer line to the edge of the roadway facing your property. The Town desires, where possible, to
accommodate the property owners in the project area by locating the service connections where best suited to connect
their domestic wastewater (toilets, sinks, showers, laundry, dishwashers, etc.) to the new sewer. Where multiple dwellings
exist on one property, each dwelling will generally be provided with a separate connection.
You may request assistance in determining the location for your service connection. Your plumber or local contractor can
assist you in this matter, or you may contact the Town’s engineering consultant for this project, Weston & Sampson
Engineers, at (774) 325-3291 to arrange for an on-site appointment regarding your service connection(s).
Please fill out the form on the other side of this letter and include a sketch (in the space provided) of your dwelling’s
layout in relation to the street and the desired location of your service connection. The examples shown below are to be
used as a guide, not as a choice. If you know the location(s) of your septic system leaching area, please also show them on
your sketch. Please return the completed form in the self-addressed envelope provided with this mailing by Friday,
September 1, 2017.
Our goal is to locate connections where most appropriate for property owners. However, if we receive no reply from you,
your service location will be selected by the field engineer at the time of the main sewer installation. This location may
not be the most advantageous for sewering your property. Thank you for your assistance.
SEWER SERVICE LOCATION FORM

The following general rules are provided to assist you in selecting the service location that best serves your property.
1. In general, sewer services will not be allowed to have more than two (2) angle points, or a total of 180-degree
change in direction. Cleanouts (capped piping that is run to the surface for maintenance access) shall be
installed at each change in direction.
2. Connections to existing building plumbing systems must be made upstream of any septic tanks or cesspools, as
these facilities are to be abandoned, in most cases.
3. Stormwater, surface water, groundwater, roof water runoff, and/or submerged drainage shall not be discharged
in any sanitary sewer.
4. Sewer services shall be located not less than ten (10) feet horizontally from any water service pipe. Exceptions
can be made if the sewer service is below the water pipe by at least 18 inches.
5. To be eligible for the fee reduction and meet Board of Health (BOH) regulations, you are required by the Town
of Nantucket to connect your property to the new municipal sewer line within two years of the official notice
that the system is approved for use.
