HOMEOWNER SEWER CONNECTION PROCESS
As part of our continuing public outreach initiative for this sewer expansion project, the attached
flow chart graphic has been created to present information regarding the process of connection
of private properties to the municipal sewer. It has been some time since a sewer project of this
magnitude has been undertaken on Nantucket. The project team has been asked many questions
about the process and what will be required from individual property owners. The attached graphic
is provided to help respond to some of these questions. As an overview, Homeowner actions in
the sewer connection process are listed in the left-hand column and Town/Contractor actions are
listed in the right-hand column. Also depicted is how the process will flow to and from each entity.
The process will begin with the distribution of Sewer Service Location Forms to all project
properties, which is the initial Town/Contractor Action in this flow chart.
Below is a glossary of some of the terms used in the flow chart. Additional information and
definitions can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions document posted on the Town’s
website at www.nantucket-ma.gov/NHS-Plus-Sewer.
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Municipal Sewer System: Town owned, operated, and maintained infrastructure that collects
wastewater from homes, businesses, and industries and delivers it to a wastewater treatment
facility.
Sewer Connection Permit: Permit required by the Town of Nantucket to connect to the
municipal sewer system.
Sewer Service: Underground plumbing that conveys wastewater generated inside a home or
business to the municipal sewer system.
Sewer Service Contractor: Contractor that a property owner hires to connect the plumbing
inside a home or business to the municipal sewer system.
Sewer Service Location Form: Form distributed in sewer service area to collect information
about a property’s wastewater plumbing and sewer service needs in an effort to locate the stub
extending from the municipal sewer to the edge of the roadway at the most appropriate location
for the property owner.
Sewer Service Type: Sewer services can be one of two types: gravity or low-pressure.
Gravity sewer service connections require adequately sloped pipes to carry the water from a
home or business to the municipal sewer system. Low-pressure sewer service connections
require an individual on-site grinder pump unit to pump wastewater into the municipal sewer
system.
Weston & Sampson: Town of Nantucket’s wastewater engineering consultant, engaged to
design and supervise construction of the Nantucket Harbor Shimmo & Plus Parcels Sewer
Extension Project.
