Below you will find the form of the question that will appear on the ballot, a summary of what the charter amendment question would do, and the effects of a “yes” vote and a “no” vote on this question, which will allow all registered voters to adequately prepare for this ballot question at the election. Please contact the Town Clerk’s Office at 508-228-7216, located at 16 Broad Street in Nantucket, Massachusetts, if you have any questions regarding voter registration, early voting, or the Annual Town Election generally. Ballot Question No. 12: Amendment to the Nantucket Town Charter Form of the Question: Shall the Town of Nantucket approve the charter amendment proposed by Town Meeting summarized below? Summary of the Question: Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 43B, Section 10, allows Town Meeting to vote to amend the Town’s Charter. On June 5, 2021, the Annual Town Meeting voted to adopt the Charter amendment. The vote on the motion pursuant to Article 96, as moved by the Finance Committee, was Yes: 668, No: 24, which passed by more than the necessary two-thirds vote. The Charter Amendment is conditioned upon the voters approving the same at this 2022 Annual Town Election. The Proposal will amend Section 2.5 of the Town Charter which currently requires that the Select Board publish the Town Meeting warrant with the recommendations of the Finance Committee by mailing a copy of such warrant to the address or postal box of each registered voter at least seven days prior to the Town Meeting. The amendment will increase the length of time for the mailing from seven to fourteen days. Effect of Your Vote: A “YES” vote on this Ballot Question would be in favor of approving this amendment to the Charter. A “NO” vote on this Ballot Question would be opposed to approving this amendment to the Charter.
