Age, Residence and Signature Requirements to Run for Office You must be at least 18 years old and be a resident and a registered voter in Nantucket. Nomination papers are available from the Office of the Town Clerk at 16 Broad Street. Call or email the office to arrange obtaining your nomination papers. Collect Signatures 53 qualifying signatures are required. Only voters registered in the Town of Nantucket may sign (signatures must be legible and signed in person). Collect more signatures than required because some may be disallowed either in the certification process or through challenges. Some reasons why signatures cannot be certified: PO Box listed instead of street address; address listed is different from the address on voting list; first or last name is different from name on voting list, name is illegible. A voter may sign once for each candidate for an office. At least one of the certified nomination papers must be personally signed by the candidate. DO NOT collect signatures at a public meeting! Persons who are prevented from signing by physical disability may authorize another individual to sign for them in the voter’s presence. No person may sign for another unless the voter is physically disabled as above. One spouse may not sign for another. When to File The deadline to file nomination papers is Tuesday, April 27, 2021 by 4:00pm. We strongly recommend you submit your papers earlier than the deadline. This allows identification of any errors in time to collect additional signatures if necessary. Any papers left in the drop box after 4:00pm will not qualify.
