PUBLIC COMMENT ON MARINE DEPARTMENT /
NATURAL RESOURCES REPORT
OLD BUSINESS
Excessive sand in scallops/Dredging plan — Discussion
No discussion.
Fertilizer-ban articles —Discussion
Mr. Brace said he didn't have an update on where these articles
were in the Finance Committee review process.
Ms. Andrews suggested there needs to be education first before
fertilizer is banned so people know the why of this proposal.
Mr. Lowell reported his participation in a subcommittee of the
Nantucket Shellfish Association (NSA).
Mr. Pronk asked if Nantucket is only allowed to use two or three
types of fertilizer.
Mr. Szydlowski said the Town regulates commercial applicators of
fertilizer, but island citizens can buy and apply whatever type of
fertilizer and however much they want to apply. Mr. Brace said
there would still need to be enforcement. Mr. Pronk agreed, but
said he though there was already a ban on a lot of fertilizers. Mr.
Brace clarified that there isn't a ban but fertilizer application
regulations for landscapers and gardeners. Ms. Andrews said it's
the volume of fertilizer, not the specific products. Mr. Brace
animal manure can sometime have more nitrogen in it that
commercially produced fertilizers.
HEALTH OF THE HARBORS
Excessive lawn fertilizer use: Update -Discussion — New
information
Mr. Lowell said the NSA's new secretary, Samantha Denette,
asked to be added to the HSAB's email lists.
Mr. Bossi noted that the Nantucket Planning & Economic
Development Commission (NP&EDC) is working on a potential
way of banning fertilizer. Mr. Lowell asked that Mr. Bossi keep
the HSAB updated on when the NP&EDC meets and when it will
be discussing this issue so HSAB members could attend these
meetings.
FDA shellfish taking prohibition in mooring fields
Mr. Brace said the HSAB is awaiting Ms. Riley's revised version
of the letter she's going to the send to the Massachusetts Division
of Marine Fisheries (DMV).
Water quality testing
Mr. Lowell wondered aloud on the status of the proposed water
quality testing lab on Nantucket.
NEW BUSINESS
Chris Fuller's video showing lyngbia algae in the harbor -

whoever else needs to see it. Mr. Pronk suggested getting the video
onto all social media platforms.
Coastal Resilience Advisory Committee —Update
Mr. Brace said he didn't have report because the Coastal
Resilience Advisory Committee hadn't met recently.
