Present: Michael Cozort, David Fronzuto, Philip Gallagher, Erika Mooney, Dr. John
O’Neill, and Jeanette Topham. Chairman Topham called the meeting to order at 4:03
PM.
1. Election of Officers. Ms. Mooney nominated Mrs. Topham as chair; Mr. Fronzuto
seconded. Mrs. Topham accepted the nomination. So voted 6-0. Mr. Fronzuto nominated
Ms. Mooney as secretary; Dr. O’Neill seconded. Ms. Mooney accepted the nomination.
So voted 6-0.
2. Approval of minutes of July 19, 2010. Mr. Gallagher moved to approve the minutes of
July 19, 2010; Dr. O’Neill seconded. So voted 6-0.
3. Scholarship funds available. Ms. Mooney reported there is $6,110 available for FY
2011 for the Town of Nantucket Scholarship. She noted she did ask the Finance
Department for the total balance for the Scholarship Fund, not just the FY 2011
donations, but the information was not available in time for the meeting. Ms. Mooney
said the current Thomas F. Curley Scholarship fund balance is $32,998.78. A discussion
followed regarding the Curley Scholarship criteria.
At 4:05 PM Pam Bartlett joined the meeting.
Ms. Mooney noted that she spoke with the Curley family and that they said they would
like to keep the criteria and award amount the same.
At 4:07 PM Mark Voigt joined the meeting.
Further discussion followed on the Curley Scholarship and the Town’s scholarship
application form. Mr. Voigt moved to add “Place of Birth” to the scholarship application
form; Dr. O’Neill seconded. All in favor, so voted.
4. Determination of number of scholarships to be awarded. The committee discussed the
number of Town of Nantucket scholarships to award and the amount of each
scholarship. Ms. Mooney recommended awarding twelve $500 scholarships for a total of
$6,000 in awards. Mr. Voigt suggested giving varying award amounts. Ms. Bartlett
concurred. Following further discussion, Mr. Voigt moved to award twelve Town of
Nantucket Scholarships at $500 each; Dr. O’Neill seconded. So voted 7-0. Ms. Bartlett
abstained.
5. Evaluation of applicants. It was agreed that Bryan Swain’s application would be
excluded from review as it was incomplete. Ms. Mooney suggested that the committee
consider awarding the Curley Scholarship first. The committee agreed and reviewed five
eligible applicants. Following some discussion, Ms. Mooney moved to award the $1,000
Thomas F. Curley Scholarship to William L. Trott Jr.; Mr. Gallagher seconded. All in
favor, so voted. The committee reviewed the remaining applications. Mr. Voigt asked the
committee to reconsider the number of Town of Nantucket Scholarship awards and
amounts of each, again suggesting the committee award varying amounts. Ms. Mooney
moved to award four $500 scholarships, four $300 scholarships, and eleven $250
scholarships; Mr. Voigt seconded. All in favor, so voted. The committee used a rating
system to evaluate the remaining Town of Nantucket Scholarship applications.
6. Selection of scholarship recipients. The four $500 Town of Nantucket Scholarships
were awarded to: Parinda Darden, Rosemary Glidden, Melissa Holdgate, and Cody
Penotte. The four $300 Town of Nantucket Scholarships were awarded to: Kristie
Flaherty, Emma Pykosz, James Rhodes, and Anthony Ricketts. The eleven $250 Town
of Nantucket Scholarships were awarded to: Matthew Anderson, Christopher Bell, Colin
Carr, Bram Daly, Alexandra Kopko, Jesse Lang, Kadeem McCarthy, Drew Moore,
Georgina Morley, Helen Morley, and Jamison Viera. Ms. Mooney will prepare a list of
scholarship recipients for the Town Treasurer and draft letters to scholarship recipients.
7. Other business. Mrs. Topham noted that thank you letters from last year’s awards are
available for reading. It was agreed that a press release will be prepared and sent to the
Inquirer and Mirror. A brief discussion followed on fundraising and getting the word out to
the community to increase donations to the Town of Nantucket Scholarship Fund.
8. Adjournment. The meeting was unanimously adjourned at 5:43 PM.
