HomeMy WebLinkAboutTown of Nantucket Scholarship Committee Minutes July 19, 2010_201402041605295491Town of Nantucket Scholarship Committee Minutes July 19, 2010, 4:15 PM Town and County Building Conference Room 16 Broad Street Nantucket, MA 02554 Present: Pamela Bartlett, Michael Cozort, David Fronzuto, Philip Gallagher, Erika Mooney, Dr. John O’Neill, Jeanette Topham, and Mark Voigt. Chairman Topham called the meeting to order at 4:23 PM. 1. Election of Officers. Ms. Mooney nominated Mrs. Topham as chair; Mrs. Topham accepted the nomination and was appointed chair by acclimation. Ms. Mooney volunteered to continue as secretary and was appointed secretary by acclimation. 2. Approval of minutes of December 14, 2009. Ms. Bartlett moved to approve the minutes of December 14, 2009; Dr. O’Neill seconded. All in favor, so voted. 3. Scholarship funds available. Ms. Mooney reported there is $7,619.47 available for FY 2010 for the Town of Nantucket Scholarship. Ms. Mooney said the current Thomas F. Curley Scholarship fund balance is $22,373.43. 4. Determination of number of scholarships to be awarded. The committee discussed the Curley Scholarship, the criteria used to award the scholarship, and the applicant pool. A discussion followed on the number of Town of Nantucket scholarships to award and the amount of each scholarship. Chairman Topham recommended awarding eight $800 scholarships. Mr. Voigt moved to award eight Town of Nantucket Scholarships at $800 each; Dr. O’Neill seconded. All in favor, so voted. 5. Evaluation of applicants. It was agreed that Samantha Tennant and Sean Donnan’s applications would be excluded from review as they are incomplete. The committee discussed going forward in executive session or open session to review the applicants. It was agreed to continue in open session. The committee used a rating system to evaluate the remaining Town of Nantucket Scholarship applications. 6. Selection of scholarship recipients. Ms. Mooney moved to award the $1,000 Curley Scholarship to Eli Fischer; Mr. Voigt seconded. Discussion followed. So voted 7-0. Ms. Bartlett abstained. The committee came to a tie for the eighth Town of Nantucket Scholarship award. Ms. Mooney moved to award the scholarship to Taylor Murphy; Chairman Topham seconded. All in favor, so voted. The remaining seven Town of Nantucket Scholarships were awarded to: Katherine McInerney, Kristie Flaherty, Maureen Malavase, Gabrielle LaFavre, Georgina Morley, James Rhodes, and Eric Roberts. Ms. Mooney will prepare a list of scholarship recipients for the Town Treasurer and draft letters to scholarship recipients, as well as those who were not awarded scholarships. 7. Other business. It was agreed that a press release will be prepared and be placed on an upcoming Board of Selectmen agenda under announcements. The press release will also be sent to the Inquirer and Mirror. A brief discussion followed on fundraising and getting the word out to the community to increase donations to the Town of Nantucket Scholarship Fund. 8. Adjournment. The meeting was unanimously adjourned at 6:18 PM.
