HomeMy WebLinkAboutTown of Nantucket Scholarship Committee Minutes November 19, 2009_201402041605299241Town of Nantucket Scholarship Committee Minutes November 19, 2009 Town Building Conference Room 16 Broad Street Nantucket, MA 02554 Present: Pamela Bartlett, David Fronzuto, Philip Gallagher, Erika Mooney, Dr. John O’Neill, Jeanette Topham, and Mark Voigt. Dr. Robert Pellicone was absent. 1. Elect officers Jeanette Topham was elected chairman; Erika Mooney was elected secretary. 2. Review criteria for awarding scholarships; what constitutes a complete or incomplete application Criteria: Town of Nantucket resident; acceptance/attendance at an accredited post-secondary educational institution; all to be influenced by academic performance and financial need. If one or more of the four documents required (application, letter from the student, copy of transcripts, financial aid release form) are missing the application is deemed incomplete and will not be considered. 3. Review and update information on NPS scholarship webpage, applications, etc. Add to the bottom of the application form (in bold): “If you have any questions or need assistance please contact Town Administration at (508) 228-7255.” Also, make changes to the scholarship application information that applications will be considered once a year (not twice as currently listed). Also change contact phone and fax. Look into the possibility of making the date the application is available earlier (April 1 vs. May 1). 4. Determine whether to award scholarships for FY09; review available funds for disbursement Yes! Committee members should review scholarship applications and be prepared to make recommendations as to whom scholarships should be awarded. $7,617.72 as of June 30, 2009; it was discussed that in the past about $1,000- $1,500 was left in the fund for the following year. 5. Scholarship Committee report for FY09 Annual Town Report Erika will draft the Scholarship Committee report for the FY00 Town Report. Jeanette will look to see if she has the list of universities for last year’s award recipients. 6. Other Business Erika will research the Tom Curley Scholarship. Fundraising was discussed. Erika will ask the Tax Collector about changing the color of the paper for the scholarship donation forms. Adding a photo of past recipients to the form was also discussed. To increase awareness of the Scholarship Fund, it was agreed that a yearly report will be made to the Board of Selectmen (if allowed) on scholarships given as well as requesting announcements to be added to the Board’s agendas to alert the public that donation forms will be mailed in tax bills. Erika will send out contact information for the committee. 7. Schedule next meeting The next meeting is Monday, December 14, 2009 at 4:00 PM in the Town Building conference room.
