HomeMy WebLinkAboutTown of Nantucket Scholarship Committee Minutes December 14, 2009_201402041605293460Town of Nantucket Scholarship Committee Minutes December 14, 2009, 4:00 PM NRTA Building Conference Room 3 East Chestnut Street Nantucket, MA 02554 Present: Pamela Bartlett, David Fronzuto, Philip Gallagher, Erika Mooney, Dr. John O’Neill, Dr. Robert Pellicone, Jeanette Topham, and Mark Voigt. 1. Approval of minutes of November 19, 2009 Mr. Gallagher moved to approve the minutes of November 19, 2009; seconded by Dr. Pellicone. All in favor, so voted. 2. Scholarship funds available Ms. Mooney reported there is $7,617.72 available for FY 2009. She then reviewed the Curley Scholarship, noting the fund was established in December 2001 with a $20,000 gift, of which one $1,000 award will be given on a yearly basis. Ms. Mooney said the current Curley Scholarship fund balance is $22,825.98. A discussion followed about increasing the award amount in future years. 3. Determination of number of scholarships to be awarded The committee disqualified Kezia Duarte’s application as it did not meet the criteria for award. The committee also disqualified the following applicants due to incomplete applications: Josef Kardel, Katherine McInerney, and Marley Thompson. A discussion of whether to disqualify Jordan Beans’ application followed, based on his application not being clear as to where he is attending school for the 2009-2010 year. Ms. Bartlett moved to disqualify Mr. Bean’s application; seconded by Dr. O’Neill. So voted, 3-4. Mr. Fronzuto, Ms. Mooney, Dr. Pellicone, and Mr. Voigt were opposed. The chair did not vote. A discussion followed on the number of scholarships to award and the amount of each scholarship. Ms. Mooney moved to award eight Town of Nantucket scholarships at $800 each and one Curley scholarship at $1,000; seconded by Mr. Voigt. It was agreed that a press release would be issued for the awards. On the motion, all in favor, so voted. 4. Evaluation of applicants The committee used a rating system to evaluate the remaining 16 applications with one being each committee member’s top choice, and 16 being their last choice. Each applicant’s rating was tabulated. 5. Selection of scholarship recipients Benjamin Ferrantella was awarded the Curley Scholarship. The eight Town of Nantucket Scholarships were awarded to: Sean Donnan, Kristie Flaherty, Heather Munnelly, Gary Pillion Jr., Aimee Ross, Brittany Watson, Melissa Holdgate, and Haley Cabre. Ms. Mooney will prepare a list of scholarship recipients for the Town Treasurer and draft letters to scholarship recipients, as well as those who were not awarded scholarships. The committee agreed to request to be on the Selectmen agenda on January 6, 2010 to announce the awards. This will coincide with a press release to the newspaper. 6. Members concerns Ms. Mooney will make improvements to the rating matrix to include a checklist of criteria. It was agreed to meet again in the spring before the 2010 applications are available. 7. Adjournment The meeting was unanimously adjourned at 5:15 PM.
