“PUBLIC HEARING”
NANTUCKET PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
7:00 PM, MONDAY, MAR. 3, 2008
2 FAIRGROUNDS ROAD
5 Members Present: David Gray, Michael Kopko, Barry Rector,
Jeff Willett, Linda Williams
Staff Present: T Michael Burns, Jeromette Hicks
Audience Present: Judith Drake, Dan Drake, Curtis Barnes, Mary Malavase,
David Barham, Wendy Hudson, Jon St. Laurent
I. Call to Order Chairman Rector called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
II. Establishment of Quorum The Chairman declared a quorum was not present, but
the Commission would take public comments concerning the Downtown Traffic
Study.
III. Approval of Agenda - Not taken up
IV. Public Hearing Item: Downtown Traffic Study
The Public Review period runs from Feb. 7 – Mar. 10, 2008
Mike Burns said he will provide the Commissioners with a draft summary
of the staff recommendations. He will try for Thursday Mar. 6th.
The study is scheduled for an endorsement (super majority) vote or
acceptance (simple majority) vote on Monday Mar. 10, 2008.
The discussion included:
Curtis Barnes:
Widening sidewalks, especially by the SSA and Hy-line
Need to take into account turning radius for trucks
Look at truck sizes and unloading times
More Taxi Permits
Surface Parking instead of parking garage
Stop sign @ Francis & Washington Streets
Asked if CPC funding might be available for some improvements? No
Judith Drake:
Look at Oak & Cambridge Street Changes
Paint on curb for parking spaces
Dan Drake:
In favor of parking garage
Look at Oak Street
Police trained to handle traffic & pedestrians
Look at more taxi stands
Take some of the ideas and try them
Mary Malavase:
Kiosk already exists on Straight Wharf & funding
No kiosks Easy & Broad Streets
No arch
Trash barrels are very necessary
Widening sidewalks should look at radius trucks need for turning
David Barham:
Leave planting beds by Boat Basin, important for pedestrian traffic
Look at widening sidewalks
Also study “pent-up demand” for parking & traffic issues
Wendy Hudson:
Very happy with change in Broad Street
Not sure about angle parking on Broad Street
Need more parking, bike paths
Need maps on boats and around town
Downtown is at risk, especially for the small businesses
Use smaller trucks
Coordinate freight
John St. Laurent:
Summer specials do a good job
Maps on the boats
Bike safety, rules should be
Have police at SSA to get pedestrians onto sidewalk
Look at Oak Street
Eliminate 3 parking spaces by Arnos building
Widen sidewalks from Pacific Club to Straight Wharf
Prevent pedestrians from walking in the streets
Don’t increase number of taxi permits
Improve pick-up / drop off at Straight Wharf & SSA
