From the BOS: Mr. Willauer. Chairman’s Report: Article 68 Workgroup: Ms. McCrae reported that the of the Article 68 Workgroup is progressing well. [The minutes of that Workgroup are posted on the Town’s website.] Approval of minutes: Mr. Boyce distributed the minutes from the last meeting which were approved by consent of the members who attended the last meeting. Mr. Holdgate and Ms. McCrae abstained as they had not attended the last meeting. Marine Department Report: Operations: Mr. Fronzuto reported that this is a busy summer. There were over 220 boats out for the fireworks event, and there was only one mishap. Temporary blue lights were set to mark the channel, and this seemed to have helped. Propagation: Mr. Fronzuto noted that Ms. Riley had spawned 8 million larvae and the project was going well. Old Business: Field Trip: The members of the Board who visited the Boathouse noted they were impressed with the progress made in converting the old boathouse into a working and viable shellfish hatchery. New Business: Visit to Peconic Bay Scallop Restoration project: Dr. Boyce reported he and Dr. Hall made to Southold, NY, to look at the large restoration project going on in Peconic Bay funded by Suffolk County, NY, for the last four years. It is a large operation based upon hatching bay scallops and raising them to spawning age. In doing so, they will have a critical mass of spawning scallops in sufficiently high densities to ensure spawning success. To accomplish this, the adult scallops are raised in lantern nets suspended on parallel long lines, which also serves to protect them from most predators. They report a doubling of the harvest last year, which is probably an underestimate. Meeting Adjourned: 5:40pm Documents: Trip report – Visit Steve Tettlebach’s Scallop Restoration Project on Long Island Respectfully submitted, Peter Boyce, Chair 1
