April 11, Open Meeting:
Ms. Topham motioned to approve the minutes, which Mr. Gray seconded,
and all the remaining present Commission members, voted in favor of this
motion.
Topics: 4:10 p.m.
Mrs. McGrath attended this meeting because of her concern for more
accessible parking spaces downtown. She was advocating for a block of
accessible parking spaces on Federal Street from India Street to Chestnut
Street. She also mentioned that the present accessible space on Federal Street
at the intersection of India Street has three trash/recycling barrels on the
sidewalk adjacent to the accessible parking space. The Commission members
discussed the need and location for more spaces.
Mr. Rowland suggested that the members look at downtown and at the Grand
Union parking lot to see where they think the spaces should be located. We
will discuss this at the next meeting.
Mr. Rowland informed the Commission that Ruth Grieder called and
requested a second accessible parking space near the Athenaeum. Traffic
2
Safety will file a request with the BOS for a new space in front of the
Boarding House.
4:20
Ms. McDonough arrived.
Mr. Moran told the Commission that Dave Dennis, one of our past members,
passed away and his ashes were scattered in several places around Nantucket.
(Mr. Dennis happily served on our Commission from April 2002 until June
2006 when he resigned for health concerns. Mr. Dennis always wore a great
smile and it complemented his smiling eyes. The Commission appreciates all
of his efforts and contributions to our Commission and island.
Mr. Dennis found a true friend and advocate in our Vice Chairman, Mr.
Moran.)
Charter Street has hitching posts along the south sidewalk even though there is
no parking either side signage posted. The Commissioners were wondering if
these hitching posts were new? Ms. McDonough will check with HDC to see
if these are new posts.
Ms. Braginton-Smith reported that the hedges on the corner of Milk and
Quaker streets are officially cut back.
Someone mentioned that the hydrangeas in front of Steve Bender’s house are
blocking access to the sidewalk.
Ms. Topham was wondering if there was any way to temporarily install more
accessible parking spaces on voting day. Ms. McDonough will talk with
Catherine Flanagan-Stover, Town Clerk, and Mr. Kanyock, Director of
Facilities at the school, and see how this can be accomplished. Mr. Rowland
noted that the push buttons for the automatic doors to the pool, high school,
and middle school are all hard wired now and should be operational all the
time.
Ms. Meriam will speak with Our Island Home’s director regarding automating
the main entrance/exit doors at the home.
Executive Session: 4:55 p.m.
Mr. Rowland stated that the Commission would not reconvene after the executive
session. A vote was taken to go into executive session to discuss parking permit
applications and Mr. Rowland, Mr. Moran, Ms. Topham, Ms. Rezendes, Mr. Gray,
and Ms. Braginton-Smith voted to go into executive session.
