Subject:Sconset Bluff erosion
Date:Tuesday, October 08, 2013 10:24:58 AM
Greetings
We own the property at 97 Baxter Road. Our main house has already been moved due to erosion.
The remaining 2 bedroom cottage is occupied year round. Last winter, half of the remaining land in
front of that cottage was lost, some 16 feet, and were we to lose the same amount of land this winter,
erosion would reach Baxter Road and our cottage would be gone.
Protection of our property, that of our neighbors on the north bluff, and Baxter Road itself is at crisis
point. It is past time for action.... let there be no further delay. We have listened to endless
commentary as to what might happen if there is erosion protection based not on fact but conjecture.
However, what IS happening to the Sconset Bluff is real and immediate.
Beach can be replaced. Bluff cannot be replaced. This bluff is an historical part of Nantucket Island
and worthy of saving for many reasons beyond those critical to the current residents. We urge you the
Selectmen and your Conservation Commission appointees to ACT NOW to bring emergency erosion
protection to the bluff,to our property and that of our neighbors, and to protect Baxter Road and its
essential role in providing us with the vital Town Services to which we are entitled by law. The delays
have been excessive and hurtful to effecting necessary protections in a timely manner. Please ACT
NOW.
Respectfully,
Margaret and Lawrence McQuade
