Our three sons have spent every summer on Nantucket and althoughwe are only summer residents our home here is as important to our family as our off-island residence. At the beginning of this summer we had faith that the town's governing body would act responsibly andexpeditiously to protect Baxter Rd. and all of the utilities and access required for homeowners/taxpayersto maintain their COs and insurance. Over the course of the summer, having sat through numerousBOS and ConCom meetings, it became apparent that no such expeditious actions would be taken. Weappreciate the BOS' approval last week of the installation of geotubes at the toe of the bluff and hopethat the ConCom decision will be a positive one. If nothing is done to protect the road at its mostvulnerable points, the next storm could compromise it and render it impassable to owners andemergency vehicles as well as damage utility services. Therefore with little time left to act it isimperative that the ConCom approve this installation at its 10/16 meeting. In partnership with the privately funded SBPF the town has the opportunity to, at the very least, testthe viability of geotubes at little cost to island taxpayers. The cost of doing nothing to save the roadwill not only be borne economically by all island taxpayers but emotionally by all who cherish Sconset, the bluff, and the historic lighthouse so many islanders, summer residents, and tourists enjoy visitingevery year. Thank you for your consideration. Dorothy Bailey
