Walker'Subject: Baxter Road Board of Selectman, We currently live at # 92 Baxter Road in a house called "Four is Enough" ( four children). Although we both had visited the island in the early 1970s, we started rentinghouses in Sconset in 1989 every year until finally purchasing ten years ago. Our family loves this island and not one of our children has ever missed a summer here during their lifetimes. We absolutely cherish our time on Baxter Road and so much enjoy the non stop parade of pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists. These people along with bus loads of touristsappear to be so happy taking in the beautiful views of the ocean and the moors, heading towards the beloved Sankaty Lighthouse, one of the island's most important landmarks. We would like to commend the Board of Selectman for approving the installation of a Geotube in the most threatened areas of erosion in an effort to save Baxter Road.Although we do not have approval from the Conservation Commission at this point in time, we must strongly emphasize how crucial it is to have this project commence before thewinter season. Many believe that we couldn't possibly have another storm season as devastating as this past year and hopefully that is true. But how can we just sit still and takethat chance? We don't know if you witnessed the tragic demolition of Ann and Sam Furrow's house at # 89 Baxter Road on May 8th, 9th, and 10th as we did. What an utterly helplessfeeling! It is of the utmost importance that we have an approval from Con Com at theOctober 16th meeting. Don't tie our hands in this partnership to preserve such a historic and significant area. Over recent years we have already had other "gentler" proposals turneddown; decisions which have further jeopardized our precarious existence. We are optimistic that the Town of Nantucket, in its fiduciary role, will take every necessary measure to insureaccess and critical town services to our homes in the present Baxter Road location. We are well aware of the various tactics taken by some to delayimplementation of this project. Whatever happened to community togetherness? When a house was burning, didn't the community members all band together to do whatever wasnecessary to save it? Hopefully we will not have to resort to legal measures to protect our rights as homeowners. Con Com must approve this project. Does the Town really want toincur so many costs and potential damages suffered from the loss of Baxter Road? Does the Town want to lose the Sankaty Lighthouse? Thank you.
