Anne: Re: SBPF presentation to the Con Com: It seems impossible to me that this plan would pass what with the disruption along Baxter Road, the permits required and all, and of course the ruination of the beach below. It is a really bad idea. Some problems are: 1. Scouring of properties on either end of each of the revetment areas (at least 6 of them) is not fair to the abutters nor to the recently moved Sankaty Lighthouse. 2. Huge follow-up amounts of sand are needed forever to maintain the revetments if they are even still there. How is this placed? Dumped over the edge from the bluff top? and/or shot from the water to the bluff somehow when there is no beach any more? It is scary to think that these otherwise intelligent home owners would go to these lengths to try to save their homes rather than just moving them elsewhere - (a tried and true historic method in Nantucket). In fact those properties were laid out originally with an extra lot across Baxter Road but many owners on Baxter Road sold them off. 3. Taxing everyone for saving these 30 (?) houses is not going to happen. Also there must be some simpler way of reconnecting electrical and water and cable tv to the remaining houses, as well as an open emergency access. There may be a paper road located along the eastern boundary of Sankaty Head Golf course. People remember cutting thru there to the Polpis Road from the lighthouse end. Perhaps all the affected houses would need septic tanks, no sewer connections. I think Twin Chimneys had a septic system (?). When one buys or builds high on a sandy bluff over the Atlantic Ocean, there are bound to be negative consequences. You and I are not responsible for what happens with natural erosion. 4. Last but not least, -Extremely high financial costs, to start, to do, to continue the sand fill. And before long, it will all fail. I've lived here year-round since l979. Was on the Zoning Board of Appeals for three years back in the 80's so I have a clue. Thank you and all concerned, especially Peter B. Brace's article for the Nantucket Coastal Conservancy, for what you all are doing to help modify and mollify the Bluff situation. I'm in and thank you. Dot Vollans PS: from John Merson @ 71 Baxter Road: he told the commission that he is the recalcitrant property owner, that he bought his house in 2003 and moved it west, 100 feet from the edge B. of the bluff. He added that the best way to have a beach and preserve it is to move the imperiled houses off their lots.
