HomeMy WebLinkAbout20130730-Merson email re revetment proposal_201404071141026905From:John Merson To:Erika Mooney Subject:Revetment Proposal Date:Tuesday, July 30, 2013 12:57:15 PM Erika, Would you kindly forward this email to the Town Manager and members of theBoard of Selectmen. At a meeting Monday evening of the Sconset Civic Association, Helmut Weimarstated that the second and larger phase of revetment construction would be paid forin part by the Town of Nantucket, that all of the maintenance on the revetmentwould be handled by the Town, and that a special tax would be permanently leviedon Sconset property owners to pay for revetment maintenance. As a year-round resident of Sconset, I think the Town would be better served bycontinuing to relocate houses threatened by erosion. in 2010-11, I moved #71Baxter more than 100 feet back from the top of the bluff. The ZBA, HDC, Concom, and Building Department were all very helpful in executing this move. While the revetment threatens all island residents and visitors with the loss of ourbeach, moving houses is a time-honored Nantucket solution. Although houses arereplaceable, Nantucket's beaches are not -- they are the linchpin of our island'seconomy. The best science suggests that we avoid construction on our beaches, bluffs, andcoastal banks. Sincerely, John -- John MersonPO Box 44571 Baxter RoadSiasconset, MA 02564-0445508.257.9021 mobile
