Subject:Sconset Bluff Revetment
Date:Wednesday, August 21, 2013 1:53:04 PM
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the Conservation Commission:
I very much appreciate the opportunity to make my opinion heard regarding the
proposed Sconset Bluff Revetment.
I also want to thank you for the time and intense effort that each of you has put in
to making this critical decision.
As you can see below, I live at 90 Baxter Road, directly across the street from
where that lovely gracious home, Bluff House, once stood. Although my family
and I have waterfront property now, it has come at a very heavy price. I almost
seem to have a direct view of my close neighbor: Portugal. I feel that I am at
ground zero.
We have lived in Sconset for almost three decades, two of which have been at the
Baxter Road site. My children grew up here and now the next generation, my
grandchildren, are following along. I have served on the Boards of the Sconset
Trust and the Sconset Chapel, and have participated in the move of our iconic
Sankaty Head Lighthouse.
It is clear then that I write to you in strong support of saving the Bluff, saving Sconset and finally saving my home by your approving the permit for
the revetment.
I have attended the open ConComm meetings and would not feel it necessary to
further expound on the scientific data.
Rather I would ask you to perceive the emotional, human side of those whose
homes are threatened.
I will ask you to read the short poem below which was written by my 10 year old
granddaughter,
Raynie Murphy, at a recent poetry contest in her 5th grade class prior to her
summer here in Sconset:
The Road to Nantucket
I can feel the hot shining sun
Shining down on meI feel the squishy sand
Between my two feet
I feel the big waves
Crashing like a big tornado
I see everyone playing
In Sconset's beach and pool
I see the loud ice cream truck
Pulling down the curb
I see the rabbits hopping
HOP HOP HOPI taste Nantucket's ice cream
One BIG joy
I taste the Portuguese bread
Oh...I can't wait!
On the road to Nantucket
The road about which she speaks is Baxter Road.
She is fully aware of the difficulties with the bluff, the ocean and nature. She
knows well that the time grows shorter every day. But yet she pursues her
childhood innocence which, I will readily confess, I fully share.
Again I thank you for this opportunity and pray that you will make the correct
decision.
Respectfully yours,
Laurance J. Guido, MD, FACS
