Subject:Letter to the ConCom from geotube project abutters
Date:Monday, November 18, 2013 1:12:48 PM
Dear Chairman Steinauer:
We, the undersigned, are the property owners adjacent to the Town’s
proposed geotube project on the North Bluff in Sconset—those immediately
to the north and those to the south of the project boundaries. We
understand that some Commissioners and other parties have expressed a
concern that our properties might be harmed by an increased rate of erosion
caused in some way by the installation of the geotube system. This letter is to
make clear that we are strong supporters of the proposed project. We
appreciate others expressing concern for us and our homes, but our concern
is exactly the opposite. Our concern is that the Town must end the delays and
move forward in the face of the clear and present danger that the continued
erosion of the bluff causes to us and to the broader Sconset community. We
are confident that the issue of so-called “end scour”, if it occurs, will be
adequately mitigated through sand placement and the measures proposed by
the Town and SBPF. If something unexpected happens we are confident that
SBPF will take timely action to adjust. We have seen with our own eyes how
the existing jute protection system has not increased erosion beyond the rate
that would happen otherwise on adjacent properties. Obviously if something
happens as a result of the geotubes that does in fact cause erosion at an
increased rate on our property we are confident that appropriate adjustments
will be made.
Please vote as quickly as possible to allow this project to proceed; it has our
wholehearted support. Access to our homes is threatened as is the remaining
integrity of the Northern Baxter community, and winter is coming. We hope
you can expedite the installation of the geotubes without further delay and
before possible storm damage makes much of this discussion irrelevant
because it is too late.
Sincerely,
