Kate called the meeting to order at 3:05pm. Charles made a motion to waive the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting and the motion was carried. He then gave a brief history of Nantucket Visitor Services for the benefit of the new committee members. Kate then brought up the bathroom situation and the fact that Pioneer Cleaning had lost the contract. We are meeting on a weekly basis with the new company in order to insure a smooth transition. Charles and Kate both mentioned that the DPW used to maintain the bathrooms and that responsibility was shifted to NVS several years ago. Charles stated that perhaps we should try to shift the burden back to the DPW. Kate also mentioned that the bathrooms are starting to show signs of wear and work needs to be done. Kate is also hoping that many island residents will attend the public meeting on the possible acquisition by the Town of the former Island Spirits and that more bathrooms could be added at that location. David discussed the 4th of July visitor statistics and stated that the total number of visitors was up versus last year. Kate mentioned that this was the first year that we partnered with NRTA to have buses available for those attending the event. As of now plans are in place to have the bus service available for next year as well. Charles asked how much the fireworks cost NVS and Kate stated that it is in the range of $38,000 to $40,000. He suggested that possibly we should sell something like t-shirts to partially offset the cost of putting them on. Kate stated that we are currently selling the Secret Garden calendar for the benefit of the hospital and that we will be providing space for the sale of Boston Pops and Nantucket Garden Club tickets. She also mentioned that NVS will act as a clearinghouse of information for the Autism Walk on August 25th. Charles then nominated Gene to take his position as the representative of NVS to the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce. The vote was unanimous and Gene agreed to take the position. Selectman Kopko stated that he was happy to see the new members on the committee and to observe the interaction that was taking place. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday August 21st at 3:00pm in the Land Bank conference room. The meeting was adjourned at 3:55pm.
