Minutes of Visitor Services Advisory Committee Meeting
Tuesday, April 24, 2007
NRTA Conference Room
In attendance: David Sharpe, Office Administrator, Kevin Dugan,
Assistant Administrator, Charles Balas, Toby Greenberg, Michelle Langlois, and Gene
Mahon.
David called the meeting to order at 3:00pm.
The meeting started with discussion regarding the budget. David stated that we
have money left over in the budget that is in the salary account. At the Town Meeting
there was a proposal to transfer the 26K to the Human Services Department. Upon
notification of this David spoke with Irene Larivee in the finance Department and
explained how Louise Conway did not work last year due to health reasons and that was
one of the reasons that there was money left over. To resolve the matter Visitor Services
was able to keep 9K of the 24K.
Next, the monthly statistics were reviewed and it was noted that all of the
numbers were up from the same period a year ago with the exception of placements,
which were down just slightly.
It was discussed as to whether or not we would be selling Daffodil pins. Charles
and Michelle felt as though we should as we had done so in the past. David will check
with Kate and advise Tracy at the Chamber. We also noted that there are 12 restaurants
who will be participating with “Daffodil Specials” duding Daffodil Weekend.
Discussion took place regarding the revised hours of operation for liquor
establishments and the decision made by the Selectmen to allow them to serve alcohol
beginning at 8:00am, Monday through Saturday.
The Committee was shown the new bags and everyone seemed pleased. Pictures
were shown of the kiosk at Straight Wharf which is currently being re-painted. The kiosk
will be open on Saturday for Daffodil Weekend and then will open for the season mid-
May. The Committee was then able to see the new bike signs and it was noted that this
year they will be reflective. The new web-site was discussed and the Committee was
advised that it should be up and running on May 22nd. At that time we will be able to post
the room availability on a daily basis. A comment card may eventually be included in
order to get feedback from visitors as to what they especially enjoyed and what other
ideas they might have as to what can be added to make their next Nantucket trip even
better. Just before the meeting was closed Michelle noted that the Governor is interested
in increasing the lodging taxes – the amount which goes to the state! She will be
attending the meeting regarding this on May 1st.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:40pm.
