Minutes of Visitor Services Advisory Committee
Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Land Bank Conference Room
In attendance: Kate Hamilton, Director, David Sharpe, Office Administrator,
Kevin Dugan, Assistant Administrator, Charles Balas, James Blunt, Diane Reis-Flaherty,
Gene Mahon, and Louise Swift. Linda Williams arrived at 3:57pm.
Charles Balas called the meeting to order at 3:00pm.
David Sharpe began by discussing the June and July statistics. He mentioned that
the number of visitors to the main office was up by 4% in June and 8% in July versus a
year ago. The numbers of visitors to the kiosk on Straight Wharf were down but that is
due to the fact that it is only open from Wednesday through Saturday this year. There is
obviously no comparison with last year for the summer annex as that is new for this
season. David also mentioned that this 4th of July was the second busiest ever.
Charles asked if we were getting more bus questions or visitor questions at the
annex. Kate answered that we will have all of the statistics for the annex at the September
meeting. She also reiterated that the office at 25 Federal Street still is and will continue to
be the main office.
Kate mentioned that the Travel & Lodging brochure will carry a $200 charge this
year for people to list their private rentals if they are not Chamber or NLA members.
These funds will be used to offset mailing and postage costs. Kate also mentioned that
she will be asking the Nantucket Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) to
contribute $500.00 towards the cost of the T &L. She also stated that the insert card will
be retained in the center of the book with the “One Call Does It All” theme.
In a general discussion before adjourning, Kate also brought up the bathroom
situation. As of now there are still no funds available for any major repairs or
renovations. The ads on Plum TV 22 and Geno TV 17 were also discussed. They have
proven to be very successful in promoting the office. Diane mentioned that she feels that
additional major Chamber promotions are needed throughout the course of the year. Kate
suggested that perhaps a “Sidewalk Sale” type event could be held prior to Columbus
Day.
Gene adjourned the meeting at 4:00pm
