Land Bank Conference Room
The meeting was called to order at 3:10pm by Gene Mahon. In attendance: Kate
Hamilton, Director, Kevin Dugan, Assistant Administrator, James Blunt, Gene Mahon,
Louise Swift and Linda Williams.
Kevin began by reporting on lodging. He noted that it has been rather quiet but
that the period just before Thanksgiving is historically a rather slow time. Christmas
Stroll inquiries have started to increase and most lodging establishments are still seeking
2-3 night minimums. At this time there is only one inn that is offering a one night
minimum stay. He also noted that there will be a substantial number of restaurants open
for Thanksgiving and Stroll. The restaurant availability for Christmas Day itself will be
very limited as there will be no downtown “sit down” establishments open. At this time
only Crosswinds Restaurant at the airport, Stubby’s and the Bamboo Lounge will be
open.
Kate then spoke about the budget and stated that as of now we are right on track
for this time of the year with our expenditures. She also stated that we should be getting
the room’s tax amount for the last quarter very shortly. Kate then advised that at last
nights Board of Selectmen meeting that Libby stated that the fireworks would be paid for
from the Cape & Islands license plate fund.
Linda spoke regarding the Room Occupancy Tax and stated that “somebody” had
told her that we should not say anything or introduce any warrant articles regarding the
ROT at this time as it could have a negative impact on the outcome. The Committee
concurred.
Kate then informed the Committee that we will be doing some work at the 25
Federal Street building. This work will consist of new carpeting as well as new lighting.
Kate also said that the bids were opened today for the Sconset bathroom restoration
project. Six bidders submitted proposals.
Kate stated that David will be meeting with Libby sometime soon regarding the
Taxi Committee and that there will be an update at the next meeting.
Kate then showed the Committee the cover for the upcoming 2010 Travel &
Lodging brochure and advised that it is now at the printers and should be available on-
island just prior to Stroll Weekend. Kate also informed everyone that we are just about
out of the 2009 T & L. Kevin and David will be distributing them once again in an effort
to save money.
Kate told the Committee that she had a conversation with Scott Thomas regarding
the Chamber decision not to print out a calendar guide for Christmas Stroll. This decision
has been reversed and the Chamber will indeed be printing them. NVS has requested
1,000 copies for our distribution at the office.
Linda advised everyone that the Independent will be printing 17,000 copies of the
Christmas Stroll program book. It will be inserted on-island as well as in several Boston
Metro-West newspapers which will give the Island tremendous exposure.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:55pm.
