1.Final design (100%) is under review by MassDOT
2.Recommended to be reprogrammed from FY
2014 to FY 2015 do to May 22nd letter from Local
Historical Commission of adverse historical
impacts.
3.Additional time recommended to address
concerns to determine that the project has no
adverse effect to historical resources.
4.Massachusetts Historical Commission will make
determination of adverse effect after additional
coordination and input from MassDOT
Environmental, Local Historical Commission, and
Town officials.
5.Cost estimate is $1,161,600.20

Summary of Nantucket Historical Commission Concerns:
1.Destruction or alteration of all or part of the site
•Dramatic increase in fill
•Path’s 14 foot surface,14+ foot base, and 2 foot elevation vs
railroad’s 10 foot surface, 15 foot base, and 2 foot elevation
2.Isolation or alteration of site’s surrounding environment
•No certainty that future phases of project will be completed
3.Introduction of elements that are out of character with site
•Asphalt, sheeting, and fencing are inappropriate materials.
•Project will leave no trace of site’s historic significance.
4.Other concerns: more outreach and visual aids necessary
•Photo renderings are necessary
•Note regarding outreach: Comments were requested in
October 2011, historical/environmental site visit conducted in
May 2012 (attended by NHC), public hearing held September
2013, additional request for comments in November 2013 and
April 2014
Requested Action:
1.Recommend the NP&EDC amend the FY 2014 – 2017 TIP to include resurfacing a portion of Polpis
Road in FY 2014.
